Not strictly metal anymore. if they ever really were; their krautish, noisy interpretation of black metal seems to have been put on hold for the time being (aside from the first track; a black metal number), but this is arguably album of the year nonetheless. If you have any love of Skullflower's early droning, noise rock days and krautrock's trippy psychedelia then this should be right up your gasse.

This live easily ranks in my top 5 gigs of all time. It's not even worth describing.

Now that you mention it, this would be a pretty intense album to experience live.

Fuck it, just neglecting the first fucking track and giving it a 10. Amazing stuff to say at least.

Yeah, it's easy to ignore it. The rest is perfect music.

I love how the opening track is regarded as the worst shit eva For me it's one hell of an epic, intergalactic bm tune.

I'm not saying it's amazing... but I do not understand the hate either.

I am not saying it is completely shit, but it is just so incompatible with the rest of the album. It could be a good song on a more regular, ordinary album, but not here.

Unfortunately this album is far too repetitive and long-winded for my taste.

Yeah, I've been getting heavy into these guys lately, and as excellent as the opening track here is.... it's just very incompatible. I've noticed when I listen to this album very often do I just start with the second track and then let it play through from there.

The bass on track V is the absolute tits. Also, have to agree with everyone else that the first track sounds wildly out of place compared to the rest of the album; I feel like there's more BM tremolo guitar and blastbeats in any one minute of that song than the rest of the album combined.

Nice to see this album claw its way back up to an 8 on here. Aluk Todolo are basically doing Skullflower's early genius work now, which is great seeing as Skullflower now seems content just to make fairly average noise music these days.

One of the hardest albums to get into. And one of the most rewarding ones too. This makes Voix look like a pop album in comparison.

Except the length, I must agree. Voix was much harder to get into. At least for me.

^Doesn't count if you've heard scores of Skullflower albums and previous Aluk Todolo works.

For me, listening it right after Voix, it was pretty dissonant, expansive and stretched out. Requires a lot of patience too to listen it for the first time.

I wouldn't call this dissonant in the same way that a lot of black metal and avant-garde metal is. Everything on it is finely balanced, even harmonious, so quite easy to absorb. It's never grating or anything like that.

Voix is effectively one song split into many parts, and has slightly rougher production so definitely the more challenging of the two.

This also sounds nothing whatsoever like previous Aluk Todolo records. Those were bordering on blackened noise much of the time; very harsh and gritty in terms of productions and flow. This is similar to early Skullflower days when they were a droning kind of noise rock; probably the easiest era of Skullflower to enjoy and not really especially difficult to listen to.

Hmm, maybe it was the length and the slowness of it but I really found Voix easier than this anyway, it had more bm-ish riffing too. Also if early Skullflower albums are anything like this I should get to it soon, I love this krautblack sound, the one here more than Voix anyway.

No.

Checking it out now, so far so good music-wise. 43 minutes is much more manageable too

Aside from the length, I'd say it's also more straightforward and accessible than this. I'm not sure which album I prefer.
