Lurker Of Chalice, a name that should ring a bell for the Black metallers out there. Two completely unavailable demos, one hard-to-get full-length. A full-length that cost many Black metaller a dear buck until it was finally re-released by Southern Lord. In my opinion, Lurker Of Chalice's self-titled, début and at the same time also final album was one of the few albums on e-bay that actually deserved to be sold for more than thirty quid/bucks???. Why? Let me tell you why.
Once in the bluest of blue moons, an album comes along that not only reminds one of the reasons why they love music, but gives reasons never before imagined. Rarely - if ever before - have inspiration and craftsmanship, atmosphere and songwriting combined as well as they do on Lurker Of Chalice.
Too much of a fanboy? Probably...
Yet I still feel the obligation to remind our users that one of the modern classics of black metal has just turned a decade old.
It remains as unique and soul-draining as the very day it was released.
No happiness, no sadness, no fear, no hope... Pure emptiness.
This is really one of the few albums I can firmly say is worthy of all the hype that it gets. Incredibly spooky atmosphere and really varied songwriting too, I mean Minions for example (favorite track) is borderline drone-ish. Some people might think I'm overestimating the degree to which there is, but I personally heard a lot of influence from this album on the new Leviathan one, and it's part of why I love the latter so much as well.

You guys are keeping this circkejerk going ? .... let me join in.
I find it amazing that this album still has the ability to grow on me ... it hasn't yet plateaud in terms of how every subsequent listen feels, it's probably because i don't listen to it a lot but judging by how it still touches me after all this time, I can safely say that this is one of the highlights of my journey in music

is not bold enough
to stare into it himself.
First listen, and i don't want to cream my pants like most on this thread...but, good enough to warrant a second listen. perhaps i'll cream then...fingers crossed.

^noice!
Anyone know from where the really short sample on Minions (6:22) is taken from?
According to my google-jitsu, The sample is a dude saying ""desecration of Christ" and it comes from The Exorcist: The Beginning.
The sampling is unbelievable strong on this album. Probably my favorite album in that regard. The unnerving crows in the beginning, The foreboding sample from The Omen on "Spectre As Valkerie Is", Silvia's sample of course is an absolute masterpiece. I wonder if the line "Conquer or Serve?" from "Vortex Chalice" is a sample or just Wrest's voice heavily manipulated, either way... Chills all over my spine! <3

Thanks for the info!
Agree about the samples. I think atmospheric/doomy BM could really benefit of more sampling. Just add a nihilistic movie quote, some reverb, and the song instantly becomes better!
I had an odd experience with this album the other day. I was listening to it and I happened to get up and looked in a mirror, and I thought, listening to something like this while looking at a mirror will make you hate yourself

Either that or make you see the odd black figure staring at you. A ghostly album no doubt.
