Noone has started a topic based purely on the band Death yet... They are quite simply one of the greatest bands of all time... What does everyone else think?

i mean that morbid angel (or dave vincent at the very least) were heavily into satanism and their image. chuck absolutely did not approve of the kind of extremism bands like morbid angel were bringing into the metal scene because he felt it had no philosophical merit, other than the superficial purpose of adding to the 'extreme' image of black/death metal. he felt that extremism was giving the metal scene a bad name and he often pointed out in interviews that he was nothing like the stereotype. he thought satanism was bullshit, he loved animals and his family and life, and he generally liked being a happy person and wasn't afraid to show it. that's what made chuck so amazing, he was always himself and he never tried to be anything else.

watch this video specifically from 1:58 to 2:20. chuck kind of mocks pete sandoval.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PTZBVvsoQLY&feature=channel_page

also i'm sure everyone has seen the interview where chuck wears his kitty t-shirt lol. bottom line though, chuck wasn't into the fake imagery bullshit, he was a real guy who loved metal and knew how to think for himself. all kinds of social groups are vulnerable to group-think, especially the extreme metal community, and chuck never fell for any of it. i wish more people could be like him.

I haven't read any Morbid Angel interviews taken from old zines from the late 80'ties or early 90'ties so I do not know about their stance from back then, but in newer interviews I've come across and the liner notes to the reissues of old albums Trey always states that their message is and always has been (his words, not mine) about thinking for yourself.

Well, if somebody says that "Human" is the best metal album ever, I wouldn't say anything against that.

I don't really see anything spectacular about Chuck's stage presence; also what I don't like about Death is that at their live performances they don't really play clean, and some of the solos sound too far off from the original. So not the best live band for me.

Well, the sound is clean. I mean they don't play the solos accurately. I don't like that.

Every death metal band has their own take on the genre, image, or whatever. Many in the genre jump on a typical bandwagon of pain, torture, gore, darkness etc. Chuck decided to take it somewhere else and combined with the actual music, makes him a legend.

I agree with you all the way, and also Chuck had his side project which took his ideas even further.

Personally I hate them. I know that they're suppose to be one of the firsts, but they're quite annoying to my ears. Vocals really suck.

I wish Death would've made more extremer albums (Mantas demos/Leprosy), but their prog style was great too. I still don't get why Symbolic is so highly rated though.

I do. That album is purely epic. Nearly every riff on that album is epic. Plus it's got just the right amount of melody for extreme metal. Plus I like his vocals on that album the most. It's my favourite extreme metal album for sure.

But too each their own. I could probably see why a more pure death metal fan or people who just simply prefer more "ominous" sounding extreme metal, wouldn't like it as much as their earlier albums.

To me, Symbolic is a near perfect marriage of his increasing technical abilities and the roughest edges of old death metal. it's still harsh, but it's clinical and precise in that harshness.

to me it's their best, an album i have been listening to and enjoying for 15 years now.... and if i had to make a desert island "top 10 metal cd's" list, it would make the cut.

Symbolic, The Sound of Perseverance... I personally prefer the later Death. Would have been great to see what else Chuck would have thrown at us had he stuck around... And though I've never met him he definitely looked like a real good guy in terms of character. RIP.

I have always admired Chuck for being the polar opposite of what most people in metal bands, and more specifically death metal bands are like image wise. I remember awhile ago, I made a comment that for me, metal has always been about anti-image. Which is a huge irony, when in fact, Most metalheads are expected to conform to a certain image to be seen as a "true metal fan". A friend of mine (who is not into metal) once said to me that he couldnt believe I was into metal. When I asked him why this was, he said it was because I was so ''nice and sweet''. For a genre that prides itself on being non-conformist, there is usually a backlash against people who do not conform to the metal stereotype. Especially in terms of image. But for me, Ive always seen the conformists as the actual posers. Those who only wear certain things, listen to certain bands, and act a certain way in order to be accepted by certain fringes of the metal community.

And this is what I always admired about Chuck. He loved metal, but never felt he had to have a certain image to "prove" that. Ive seen videos of him wearing short shorts, sandals, and of course, the legendary video were he wears that cute kitty T shirt! You are totally right, the metal community is just as vulnerable to the group think mentality as any other social groups. And the more extreme the metal genre is, the more vulnerable it is. I have always been against any kind of attitude that says you must look and act a certain way in order to "be metal". Ive always done my own thing, and never followed the crowd. And thats why Ive always felt a stronger kinship with Chuck than with any other metal musician. He embodied what for me, metal has always been about. Non conformity, and always being true to yourself. There was nothing fake or false about Chuck, everything he did was from the heart, and as well as being an amazing musician, that is what I love about him most of all. I also wish more people could be like him.

The beauty of Symbolic is in simplicity. Human and ITP were more complex and then it, and so was TSOP. I tried playing some songs on guitar and they were very easy. Plus, there no really complex rhythms or rhythm changes. I basically learned to play "Crystal Mountain" on classical guitar when I was visiting my parents...

So somehow simple riffs just make good and catchy songs. Well I guess you have to Schuldiner to write something like that. One of my TOP 3 albums...

Symbolic has Such Great songs and the solos are a waste of time trying to learn.
I still wonder what kind of equipment Chuck used. I mean the tone is perfect.
Especialy the higher notes or harmonics. They SCREAM Death.
But I still believe Andy Laroque was the best guitarist to ever play in Death.
