Vocal harmonies were and still are one of Alice In Chains' defining characteristics. They are featured throughout every track on The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here, William DuVall's second album under the Alice In Chains moniker. Are there distinguishable differences between Layne Staley era and William DuVall era vocals? Sure. We heard similar differences on the band's last release, Black Gives Way To Blue. William DuVall predominately accompanies Jerry Cantrell with harmonies and only occasionally will you hear DuVall or Mr. Cantrell singing solo. Gone is that roaring, emotive croon of yesteryear. But, there is still a semi-hypnotic quality about the harmonies today. It's a quality that existed with the harmonies when Layne Staley was singing, and it's nice to hear that same quality carry over into the new era. You could say that William DuVall is a serviceable addition to the Alice In Chains legacy.

I really hope the album is better than the two singles that have been released. Otherwise, it will be a huge step down from the monumental comeback that was Black Gives Way to Blue.

The new AiC is a long, boring mess. This is coming from somebody who gave their comeback album a 9/10. The performance, almost 70 minutes long, lacks a single remarkable track, even though Cantrell is pulling out all the stops. I'd say the somewhat sterile vocal performances/harmonizing are to blame.
This is the first AiC album in which the trademark harmonizing is not the highlight of the album, in my opinion. Right now, it looks like this baby will sit right by Todtgelichter for worst album of 2013.

Dan is correct, and even Jerry Cantrell once defined Check my Brain's main riff as "seasick-like"

i'm not the biggest fan of Alice's 90's, not into too much grunge. But this AIC presents a very credible and strong heavy metal vein, it's a great album..

Do you mean most disappointing? Apnoe isn't horrible, it's just a major letdown for me. I have yet to spin this yet so stay tuned.

Some fantastic stuff in here, but I don't think it tops their excellent comeback album (by a slight margin though).
Still needs a few more spins!

Apnoe definitely has its merits, but it was, in my view, a total step backwards from Angst in every respect. The vocals have become a real weak point, about 85% of the album is dull and mundane, and I really don't like just how steeped in melody Apnoe was. Part of what was so tantalizing about Angst (your 2010 AOTY, and one of my all time favourites) was just how much they managed to mix into a cohesive, challenging musical arrangement: swirling post-rock, black metal, shoegaze, with long sinewy melodies that are almost absent on Apnoe. It's definitely not a bad album, though- I've rated it as "not good" because it didn't satisfy my own personal tastes-- obviously it has grown a little bit for you, though, and I'm happy you enjoy it. I haven't listened to Super Collider, but I'm almost certain it makes Apnoe look like a total masterpiece.

Anyway, let me know when you've listened to the new AiC. Apparently I'm in the minority about this album again- it's a total snoozefest, in my opinion.

Love it. If you like AIC you can't help but like this one. It still retains many of the heavy, doomy parts while giving a huge does of their patented layered vocal sound. Unlike Soundgarden, AIC has stayed mostly true to their roots and not gone totally 'Pop', even if their current material could be played on the radio. The bottom line is the quality songs keep coming and it sounds like AIC. Something I don't think I'll ever tire of.

I said what I said because I was never a big fan of AIC, so for me this AIC is much more appealling.. much more heavy metal than grunge and for me that's a huge incentive to appreciate the band more now

I never really saw the original AiC as grunge but then I never really bought the line of anyone being grunge. It was all just rock and roll to me. Anyway, I really dig this album. Standout track is "Phantom Limb". It's a beauty. I love Sean Kinney's drumming - he really defines the AiC sound for me. Not only is his playing on this album wonderful but the sound is great too, especially the hi-hats.

Yeah! Your're right, "Phantom Limb" and most of the instrumental pieces in here really standout a lot, making it a great album and a very good follow-up to Black Gives...

Anyway, let me know when you've listened to the new AiC.

I have just listened to 5 tracks off the album. I can compare this to old AiC because I have not listened to their last album, yet. Considering what music I am interested in the most ATM (atmospheric black, post black, post metal, atmospheric sludge) this album is obviously quite different from what I am used to. Maybe that's why I like it. It uses Jerry Cantrell's (who I think is a genius) formula to a T and I really get that 90's nostalgic feel. A really nice jollity.

Justin Broadrick, Steve Wilson, Dan Swano, Trent Reznor, Devin Townshead. Jerry Cantrell? Am I off-base here?

Good album. Sure, I'd like them to try and do a 'Dirt v2.0' but this album is enjoyable and well done. I wish there were some heavier songs, but I guess that's why I listen to death metal. I love Alice In Chains and this album provides more material to enjoy. I have to give it a few more listens, but so far so good.
