Catacombs is a band that was formed during the birth of the first half of the 00s and it is the one-man project of the persona behind the mysterious nickname Xathagorra Mlandroth . After some EPs during 2003/2004 the band managed to return during 2006 with its first full-length release, "In The Depths Of R'lyeh", and what an almighty and utterly promising debut album it is i must confess! Catacombs move in funeral-driven doom/death metal sounscapes, something we can refer to in otherwords as extreme doom metal, and Xathagorra definitely knows what he's doing! While listening to this US band you may notice Evoken references, but in a slower pace, and of course the distressing feeling we all loved in the guitars of diSEMBOWELMENT is present in the agonising floating guitar melodies (without the more upbeat outbursts of the Australian legends), something i highly appreciated since it's not something everyone can achieve if he can't feel it deep inside!

Seriously underrated. 'In The Depths Of R'lyeh' is one of my favourite Funeral Doom songs.

This is one of those albums that really makes me want to explore funeral doom further. This and any Esoteric album.

So yeah, I just gave this album a new listening. It must have been at least 2 years ago. Turns out I like it even more than before. Sounds simple but it's so solid and well written.

You... You lied to us.

Xathagorra Mlandroth is sick. His wife announced it on a facebook post before deleting it.

Well, thanks. Now I feel like a dick. :\
He did post this on August 2017 though (half a year after your post that is):
Quote:
New releases are imminent. Clips of new album(s) coming soon. Long time coming, but I've been working on three different albums (death/doom, groove-laden faster death metal and an industrial/death/doom album) so it's a lot to work on, though progress being made faster on all three. I'm not sure which will release first but, rest assured, they're all fucking coming. Hails.

Or was that sickness-post later than that?

The post was around October last year. It was deleted since then.

I wish there was a dark ambient version of this album. If something like that exists, please tell me, okay?
