I honestly hope he is just very successful at trolling. I find him hilarious with the language he uses in his reviews and stuff, but I also get why no one wants to be roasted by their peers
There have been a lot of threads created in the past about this, but hopefully this can become the definitive guide to depressive bm. If you have any depressive bm bands you enjoy, please share them. I'll start by posting a few (I haven't heard all of them, but I plan to quite soon).
Burzum (Nothing more needs to be said, really)
Drudkh: Awesome band from the Ukraine, especially in terms of atmosphere. In terms of dbm, the first album is probably better than the latter ones (I only have Autumn Aurora which is stunning).
Krohm: Havent heard but plan to get 'A World through Dead Eyes' soon. I would like to hear some opinions.
Beatrik: Again, I only plan to get Journey through the End of Life. I would like some opinions.
Veil: Relatively unknown USBM band. I have heard good things about their release 'Dolor' available from Autumn Winds Prod.
I chose not to mention Xasthur, as I hardly find them depressive, just tedious. WAY overhyped due to this whole 'suicidal blackmetal' craze.
If anyone could post info on some Swedish dbm such as Hypothermia, Kyla, Durthang etc that would be excellent.
Most of the depressive black metal I've listened to lately has been complete shit, but I really like what My Widow has made.
yeah there seems to be a lot of bands lately going for the shock factor with imagery and lyrics but the musics crap
The album Melenkoli "wind" is probably old news but i have only just recently discovered it. I find the band name doesn't deceive, the feeling after listening to this whole album is definite "Melenkoli"
Melankoli has produced some of the most beautiful depressive black metal ever. Their guitars are so dreamy and atmospheric.
Written by Guest on 21.05.2014 at 07:35 Sombres forets would be the closest sounding band to gris i reckon, but you have probably already heard them
That's pretty much the only other really similar band to be honest. I mean I know anyone can recommend a bunch of different atmospheric/depressive black metal bands but the specific type that Gris and SF play go more hand-in-hand. Even their one-time collaborative project doesn't fit the bill, and the rest of the Quebec scene tends to be more harsh and raw.

I used to delve a lot into DSBM when it became more popular after Shining released IV (not saying there wasn't before, just seemed like it sparked alot of interest for it). However, the only albums that have stood the test of time for me personally are the ones by Krohm, Nyktalgia's Peisithanatos, Lantlos' first two album and maybe Austere's To Lay like Old Ashes. Which if you might notice, I actually have a tendency to prefer the well produced albums, also less into the Blackgaze/DSBM fusion tbh. The Eerie Cold is also not bad at all.
Speaking of which I seriously hope Krohm is working on something, I've checked in time to time with whatever information is available and zilch.

That's very nice idea, To Lay Like Old Ashes is very well formal productional depressive black album. I guess if bands of the genre makes it well formal recording then it is very nice touch for the fans ears. Depressive blak metal is very emotional touch, if well make producing will attractive be more. Some band like Sad Legend..
