Decibel released their top 100 black metal issue recently. For those who are cheap like me here is the list in image form (Sigh posted the list on FB and I made the list using http://top100.topsters.net/ ). Open image in a new tab if you can't see.

What do you guys think? I'm going to make my own personal top 100 BM list and I'll be interested to see what your personal top 100 BM albums are (or of any other genre, I don't give a fuck).

You can make a top 50 on that website as well if you don't know 100 albums.

I see few avant-garde, post black metal, experimental, dsbm on that list... y'know.. Variety
Even industrial and symphonic are a bit low... Perhaps it's more directed to the straightforward stuff?
Also, the fact that I know or heard about 95% of all them suggest that underground bm is also missing...

Well, a list made by me would have much more avant-garde and experimental, but I guess this must have been made based on other ppl opinions, votes and such...?

I know most of those bands and i'm not very knowledgeable, seems like a pure black metalers list, even the sub genre bands seem to be the originators of there sub genre

Not the most imaginative list but it's perfectly formed for someone just getting into the genre and who wants a varied look at most of its subsets.

Although I'd argue "Immotal" never made much of a contribution to the scene. And Mayhem's "Ordo Ab Chao" was pretty poor too.

I was waiting for this list. I can't disagree with the Top 10 for the most part, although I personally would put Hunger over Blaze a million times ten. Also, Dissection's Storm of the Lights Bane I think I would put in the Top 10.

Whatever, I'll find more Black Metal albums with this list, anyway.

Bathory, Venom, Celtic Frost, Dimmu Borgir and Cradle Of Filth.

So I do listen to Black Metal?!?

I thought 1st three where Thrash (Bathory, Venom, Celtic Frost), NWOBHM (Venom) and Viking Metal (Bathory). Oh and according to the Tr00 crowd, Dimmu Borgir and Cradle of Filth are Gothic or Symphonic Metal.

So confused...

The first three Bathory albums are clearly black metal. Venom kind of "blackened" although I don't know what to call it with today's standards. Same with Celtic Frost, although more of a Thrash band with huge influence on the black metal scene. First three Cradle albums are sympho black and the same with all Dimmu albums IMO. Even though they aren't "tr00".

Immortal are far better than most of the bands on this list At the Heart of Winter and Sons of Northern Darkness are more than brilliant. I agree with you about their older stuff though, very overrated

A "normal" black metal list.
I think Mayhem - Live In Leizig and Beherit - Drawing Down the Moon are overrated here though.

The top 10 is generic as shit, but as Joe said, this is a good list for people first getting into the genre. If I were to make something like this, however, I'd try not to include more than one album per band.

Is the list more about contribution or about being a ''top'' album?

If it's about contribution, well yeah, a bunch of bands should not be there. I mean, I like Watain, but they haven't rewritten black metal neither.

As much as I like Watain, I can't see 2 albums in the top 100. They are good, but not THAT good.

Pretty typical. Apart from switching a few albums around, I can agree with the majority of it. I'm not gonna do a top one hundred, but I'll do a quick top ten:

1. Dissection - Storm of the Light's Bane
2. Emperor - Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk
3. Darkthrone - Translyvanian Hunger
4. Immortal - Pure Holocaust
5. Burzum - Hvis Lyset Tar Oss
6. Satyricon - Dark Medieval Times
7. Dimmu Borgir - Stormblast
8. Mayhem - Live in Leipzig
9. Emperor - In the Nightside Eclipse
10. Gehenna - Seen Through the Veils Of Darkness

Other than Storm of the Light's Bane, the rest will switch around on any given day.
