There's been a lot of blackened death craziness being served up lately in our beloved metal genre. Within the past two years especially, it seems like the style has been seeing a return to form of sorts, with the likes of Bølzer, Teitanblood, Diocletian and others dishing out albums that are pleasantly old school, yet with a delicious modern twist. Of all these bands, however, it is probably Belgium's Emptiness who stand as the most immersing and emotive of them all. Their 2014 album encapsulates this idea perhaps better than ever before, and is nothing short of excellent.

and this is not your typical blackend death metal. It's rather slowed down, mostly focusing on build up and tension.
Track 4 is the best track I've heard this year.

What you said was a bit hard to understand until I actually listened to the album just now. I think I agree with you, but this seems to be the kind of album that needs quite a few spins in order to judge it. After a first spin I honestly have no idea what to think of it other than that it all sounds interesting and original enough for more spins. The album is a bit on the short side though.

The album is a bit on the short side though.

That is one of the main reasons this stands out for me, considering a lot of these types of albums are unnecessarily long. When an album clocks 1 hour+, there's a fine line between genius and tedium.

To talk about this one, one does need some time and lots of listens. I mean, It's not really easy to say weather it's bad or not.

I agree it's a rare album that begs for multiple listens before fully grasping it, but I knew by the end of the first track that it was excellent

Having listened to this 5 times now I can say it's not really clicking with me the way I expected/wanted. Sure, it's an original and interesting album, but it's blowing me away by any means. About a 7.5-8 if what I'd give it now, so I still like it.

(Lol, and yet again the same ratings by Joe, Alex and mz)

I have a fulltime job (40 hours/week), so I don't see why you would say that.

Just wanted to point that out (even though it's pretty obvious). Deal with it.

I'm hoping you just happen to look at the album scores and notice their names as opposed to looking at their individual ratings to see what they have in common.

It's the former, yes. As I just told mz on a different page, I visited a few album pages and noticed their names and identical scores every time. However, I did, out of curiosity, just check out mz's 9's of 2014 and noticed pretty much every one of those albums got awarded by an 8 or 9 by Joe and Alex as well, hahaha.

We may have a lot of similar scores but we also disagree quite frequently too. If something does happen to get good scores from us all then you know the band in question is doing something right

That opening track is probably one of the most atmospheric songs released all year. Immediately gave me the chills and a rush of pure melancholy that I got when I first heard Lurker of Chalice. Dark stuff.

It's my favourite of the album. It's just perfect. I said it before, but to me it's mid-eighties era Killing Joke transposed into black/death.

Killing Joke is one of those bands I sadly never paid much attention to. I've only heard some of the stuff they did with Dave Grohl and I remember liking it. But the comparision you made really motivates me to investigate their discography further! Any starting point you'd recommend?

Well I might not be the most qualified person to do that, as I am one of the very few people (I think) who prefer their post-punk and darkwave era to everything they ever did. But if you want to understand what I meant, take Brighter Than A Thousand Suns for a spin. It's my favourite.

Interesting. It's a great album, but I think there are about ~10 albums that are better from this year. I'm sure you can guess what my aoty is so far

Is the only album this year I've heard that feels truly fresh to me. A lot of bands are cottoning on to the whole dissonant thing and it's getting a bit old and predictable, even if they are well done (TGOO for example: very good but about 2 years or so too late). This has the benefit of being something I can't compare anything else to, as well as being extremely enjoyable to listen to, and perhaps most importantly an album that sits at the back of my mind as something I don't fully get yet.

While there are other great albums this year, they tend to exemplify existing ideas, whereas this album feels like a subversion of ideas, almost as though a deconstruction of black and death metal. Being something without actually being something is one the highest accolades I can ascribe and not many bands pull it off (Lurker of Chalice, Murmuüre etc)

It was K7's twin brother saying that, so ignore

Btw I wonder if the upcoming Aevangelist has already leaked. Will be giving it a first spin later tonight.

If it has that's the first I've heard about it, so no idea what K7-2 is talking about.

I think Alex Fenger put me on to the their 2012 album which was really good. Thing is I'm not 100% sure it was that album as the name and album cover is really generic but it sounds like it. It was a good album, just overshadowed by Aevangelist.
