And the weird thing is that they used to be aqwesome live at the time of Remission, but somehow they became worse live with every subsequent album. usually bands improve live over the years, even though albums might get worse.

That is weird. Maybe over time they just lost the passion and excitement of playing live, they looked uninterested/bored when I saw them. Very stale set.

I saw them live at Graspop in 2011, just before the release of The Hunter. It wasn't just a lack of passion, they were making a lot of mistakes. I wrote it off at the time as crappy sound engineering but have watched loads of live performances since on YouTube and they're all pretty poor. Their latest performance on Letterman featured some really bad vocals from the drummer.

I also find it very odd how they were seemingly a great live band during that Remission era and have deteriorated since. Maybe they've just stopped practising.

Interesting. I've never liked Mastodon anyways (the show I saw them at I was primarily at for other bands), so I doubt I'll look into their older live stuff. I would definitely put their performance up there with the worst live bands I've seen, although maybe not quite Underoath/Times of Grace territory

This makes me feel a lot less conflicted about choosing to see the university pop/gospel choir instead of Mastodon last weekend. I had my suspicions myself, but thanks muchly for confirming that I chose the right concert.

In all fairness, they really aren't my favourite band to start with (even though they don't belong to any of the genres I tend to avoid) but it was boring seeing them, one of those sets you just kind of stand there and wait for it to end. University people probably had their game face on, those choirs are pretty serious afaik.
