I was having a discussion the other day with my friend.
It started with him dissing on Arch Enemy.
I asked him why he didn't like them and he told me,
Quote: " She's a chick dude. A chick doing death metal just sucks. Chicks are just not made for singing metal, especially Death metal"

Now I went on to argue that metal is not bound by gender, race or sexuality.
At least I think its not.
Music is music no matter who you are.
I wanted to know other opinions on this matter.
Do you agree with my friend or not?

It's generally harder for women to death growl because they usually have naturally higher voices, but with practice a women can still growl really well, and some women can growl really well. Likewise, I would think some vocal styles come more naturally to women, like high pitched screaming.

I think I have seen such thread somewhere, old school staffers can help me here remember ?

I completely disagree with your friend. Dismissing females (any style of vocals) in metal simply shows that person has a much more narrow appreciation of talent. Everyone of course has the right to their own opinion. We all know metalheads are notorious for being opinionated. When I first heard Arch Enemy, it was the the song "Burning Angel" and I had no idea it was a woman singing. Plus, Angela has a much more interesting range of growling than most male vocals AND she articulated the lyrics much better than many male growling vocalists do. They call it "cookie monster" vocals because you cant understand what they are saying (if you've ever seen Sesame St.)

I also think that disliking Angela or other female growlers also has to do with gender roles. Seeing a tough looking assertive, growling woman is probably not what some guys are attracted too in any sense.

From a post/sludge/atmospheric metal side of things I very much enjoy hearing a female clean or sludge style scream - it's original - bands such as...

I'd like to say this as well but judging by some people's opinions, that's not the case. There are so many good bands with female vocals, growls, cleans or whatever. Many of them have been posted here already.

It just seems like women always have a hard time with these things. There is always some guy, usually, that says stuff like this. It shouldn't even be an issue.

Also, right now my favourite bands with female vocals are probably Kylesa and Grayceon.

No offence to your friend but he is completely ignorant when there's plenty of talented Female musicians/vocalists in the Metal scene (a lot of great examples are already mentioned in this thread)

I don't think Angela Gossow is a great vocalist but it depends. Of course I think women can be in metal if they want to but some some women just become overrated because they are women even if it is not good. That's the real problem.

If anything, I think the female vocalists are balsier than the guys. It takes a lot more to get up there knowing the stigma is already working against you. Some of these ladies can BRING it too. Arch Enemy was 10 times better on Wages of Sin than the previous album. This goes all the way back to rebellious rockers like Blondie. Your friend is just ignorant and has no idea what he is talking about.

I don't agree with your firiend. What you said is spot on. Metal is for the masses and we welcome it no matter who it comes from.
