Any devout follower of black metal should know the name of Leviathan, a project that has helped to give America a significant presence in the genre's international scene time and time again. After a four year absence, and dealing with a few of life's many curveballs, Jeff Whitehead is back on the music scene, assaulting our eardrums with a new album from his twisted offspring. Beware: things are about to get ominous, and there's no playing it safe here.

Saw this at some point today and thought I'd go ahead and add it. Official release date was gathered from Leviathan's bandcamp. I really like the artwork, and hope the music is a step away from TTTW and towards aSiS or MCAAL

Looks pretty similar to the creatures he drew for the inner artwork for Massive Conspiracy. I hope that's a hint that this will maybe sound more like that album

Damn, when I saw you guys talking about how good the art was I was expecting another Wrest piece like Massive Conspiracy, Death Mask etc. which I'm really not a great fan of style wise. This though is really fucking nice.

I believe you are correct. I think he probably did a bunch of paintings in this style, which is cool, because that means physical editions will have some nice eye candy!

Leviathan should really just abandoned the shit writing. The crescent moon is practically synonymous with the band now and would be more than enough.

That logo is most probably embossed. So get the vinyl version of it and it really works well.

Where I am I can get neither the vinyl nor the CD, nor get them shipped. I'm just complaining for the sake of it . But yeah it looks so unnatural that's most likely what he'll do with the vinyl. I wonder why he didn't just draw it by hand, integrated to the art, though.

On a lot of Leviathan vinyls the logo is embossed.

Not 100% sure seeing as the first single of the last album was amazing and the album turned out a bit poo, but this song indicates that the new one should be a bit good.

I think the two songs released definitely hint at something a lot better than the last one. Even Wrest himself thinks that album sucks.

So I'm not quite in the inner-circle when it comes to Wrest. People have recommended plenty Leviathan to me and I always walk away fairly indifferent. I think he is talented, but just fails to fully engage me. However, I do feel that Scar Sighted has managed take me at least a step further down the rabbit hole. It's funny that I'm listening to a black metal album and the best comparison I can make is Skinny Puppy. Sure, there is plenty of minor chords and tremolo with heavy distortion, but the overall aesthetic and use of samples just screams early 90's industrial. Good thing Too Dark Park is one of my favorite albums. Aside from the general creepiness, I also dig the weird, bendy discordant guitar work and bipolar nature of the a-melodic and melodic. Songs like "Wicked Fields" display utter chaos and abandonment of convention, while others like "Within Thrall" are filled with Mayhem-like hooks straight out of early second wave. These switches are known to happen within the same song as well. There are definitely moments that remind me of Cultes des Ghoules' Henbane. Plenty of undiscernible, cavernous howls and bizarre song structures. Never predictable, pretty enjoyable, but it's going to take time to truly digest this. It's kind of like watching Requiem for a Dream: you know it's a great work, but it's not something you could come back to every day. Full, only slightly longer review here.
