I am looking for black metal bands in the 90s that didn't get well known but they were awesome.I don't mean bands like Darkthrone or Mayhem but for bands that never became famous in black metal.

I just know what it is like in norway.
There are a lot of metalheads
If a good bm band was founded in the 90s, no chance in hell theyd stay underground for long (unless ofcourse, they hide in their basements and never let anyone hear their shit). Its not like they will get signed by a huge company or anything, but a lot of people will like them and a lot of people will come to their show.
We are a country of 4.5 million people, and the scene is quite tight, it wont take long for a band to get fans.

I dont see how having more fans makes you care about music less, honestly. It doesnt make sense

Basicly the whole BM scene is underground, and there are underground bands amongst these, but I won't say that these are worse. They just released an LP or two, and they're not discovered yet.

because money becomes a factor?

for example: people may say that satyricons changes in style were a natural progression. but now they've released albums on roadrunner and EMI, they aren't going to do anything that might be controversial with their bosses.

Not neccesarily
satyricon is a quite bad example
There are local bands who are known all over the country\world
wouldnt call them underground, but they never changed their sound
Im not talking about big bands that you see in the newspaper, and that the average person would know. You would need some interest and knowledge about the bm genre to be familiar with them but i still wouldnt call them underground.

of course it makes sense...
when the music you made makes you have fans and grow up, it needs courage to change your style, I mean, to make new moves.
this can make a band write the same kinds of music for the rest of their lives...

the underground is more open to this kind of moves, because there is no money involved, and there is nothing to lose, because you are doing it for yourself, not for the others...

I find Dodheimsgard as a known BM band, but it depends from one to another

Another thing.stop blaming BM bands that aren't in the un derground scene anymore, and stop blaming them for signing with big or less big record companies.some bands have signed over the years with big record companies and still play a very good music.one good example is Negura Bunget, who signed with Code666.they make money, lots of money for a BM band, but still play great.bands like Dimmu Borgir,Satyricon etc changed their style and quality after signing, but I don't find it blameable.it is normal for us to believe that the best thing a BM band should do is stay in the underground and play the classic raw BM.but it's understandable they what to become more popular,to have more fans, and, ultimately, earn some nice money after theis work.if they don't change like Covenant for example,it means they reached their objective, and you can still hear some good BM.of course,it's a matter of judgement.most BM metalheads in Romania consider that BM bands should stay underground.I disagree,as long as they still play BM,even if some electronic, melodic or newer metal influences appear in their songs

I agree with you on some points, like we shouldn't judge bands for signing with big companies. But, don't forget, that most of these bands changed their music, because the company/market forced them to. Fine, if the band feel that they want to experiment with their music, or bring some new influences, do it. But there's a difference between musical evoultion and comercialisation.

Norway doesnt count... Because Black Metal is huge there, many bm bands that we consider (not just in the US, but America in general) undreground are fucking popular in Norway, and most norway's underground bands we not even know that they exist....

Why don't we talk about some bands, as this topic should be about, instead of arguing over all these things?

Well, a good band that I love and never got well known is "Fiendish Nymph". They were founded in the later 90s and still exist, but are pretty much completely unknown. They have a folk project with a similar name, which is also more popular.

Underground has many layers. Some of them are better know some of them are not... some of them are more "fundamental" and "true" some of them are less... that is all.
I also think that Black Metal is musical underground because basic conceptions of that genre are too dark for most people listening music.

My problem with knowing what is underground and 'more' underground is that I just...don't know...for me it is all the same, I rarely venture to the more mainstream sounds, yet I believe most of my bands are not *that* underground compared to some other metal bands, but I just wouldn't know...maybe a band that I think is tr00 and kvlt is known by a lot of people, or a band I've never heard of is extremely popular. Well, okay, that's never happened, but it might...

What about Masters Hammer? Im not sure how popular they are over in Europe, but I saw a double album of theres in a used CD store and picked it up off a whim, I later found out its unavailable in Canada (not even on the north american HMV website) and it was a pretty good album. how well known are they?

Mandrake Scream
I once got into a band named Ningizzia, from some guys discussing it right here on MS. As far as i know they only got one album, Dollorus Novella. The only stuff I would hear from them was the free samples at their website. But on a trip to France I had the miracle of actually finding their album by mistake. I found it pretty amazing, quite an incredible work. And they are just two guys, LOL.

And also...they've got a cover for Freezing Moon....that Mayhem song. (just mentioning it...this is how i got to hear them )
Well i really like this band...but I dont know if it is really known or not.

Masters Hammer differ from the other black metal bands of the period, I agree, they're very progressive and experimental, but the core of their music is very much black metal.

For more melodic Black Metal: Woods of Ypres is grand
For more abrasive black metal: Aeternus

Both of these bands are fairly well known I suppose but neither of them get the recognition they deserve. Oh, and Wolves in the Throne Room = dope as well

One and only Night Conquer's Day - definetely one of my favorite black metal bands
They have two albums The First Snowfall and Rebellion IS The Art Of Survival.
The First Snowfall is almost impossible to find (orginal) and I bought it directly from Tim, I hope it will arrive soon, and Rebellion is still available, buy it you won't regret it. It is mid tempo ambiental black metal, with scream and clean vocals and dirty guitars.
