Some info on this day!
"The first IWD was observed on 28 February 1909 in the United States following a declaration by the Socialist Party of America. Among other relevant historic events, it commemorates the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire (New York, 1911), where over 140 women lost their lives. The idea of having an international women's day was first put forward at the turn of the 20th century amid rapid world industrialization and economic expansion that led to protests over working conditions. Women from clothing and textile factories staged one such protest on 8 March 1857 in New York City. The garment workers were protesting what they saw as very poor working conditions and low wages. The protesters were attacked and dispersed by police. These women established their first labor union in the same month two years later."

@Ernotar: Well, we actually allready have international children's day so... But as I pointed out before we also have the men's day too. Anyway, nothing wrong with this day, I only wish that this isn't the only day we focus on gender issues...

@ Torelli I know, that was the whole point. We have the international children's day, but on that day no one is insisting on an international adults' day... I agree, women's day shouldn't be the only day to respect women. We're all equal every day.

For the last time (it's not the first time this is said in this particular thread...) don't take everything so seriously! Just read the sentence carefully through (twice should be enough). Then check the context (women's day thread). Read the sentence once more and figure out it might just be a joke.  So, got it now? It may not be a fact, although I'm seriously starting to believe in it... Was it clearly enough articulated now?

ah, I didn't know about the origin of women's day. Thanks to the information above. It seems that women, as compared to men are really back (in many aspects), in many poor countries(like my own country). so, women's day is for them.

IMO It is, like St. Valentine, a comercial day, it increases the flower sales and the teddy bear sales, but nothing more. It's not really significant. I don't care about it, because they're women everyday and they're wonderfull everyday, and they're beautiful everyday and we love them everyday.

The day itself isnt a bad idea. I mean that in reference to those girls in Africa who get their clits chopped off or women in extremely oppressed areas, not the girl next door who cant find a job because "everyone is sexist". Too bad its executed as another bullshit Valentines day type deal.

Unless theyre getting raped or having sex with their husband/boyfriend, theres no point to have sex since there isnt any pleasure from it. Its called "female circumcision".

According to those women, if girls don't get their clitoris cut out, no man will love them. As well as being brutal, it's not hygienic at all...they use knifes and pieces of glass, so after that, if the girl hasn't died, she will have serious infection and sexual problems, and also you can imagine the mental problems she can develop.

I think its silly to have a women's day. We are not superior to anyone and we dont need a day to show that we exist. Its like the father or mother's day. Its a symbolic thing I get it but it still doesnt make sense to me. I ignore all those days, even saint valentine's day. Its a social construction I dnt get.

We also have 23rd of February....it's like the male counterpart of the International Women's Day....in fact it's the Defender of the Fatherland Day or something like that but it's more or less treated as men's day....woot...we also have a day....tho it's in fact celebrated only in Russia....

this day is kinda big deal here, when I was younger I loved this day cause I had good excuse to kiss each and every girl in school ...that includes a lot of bleeding while trying to steal neighborers roses cause, if you want to kiss, you need to have a gift hehe
