Preferred CD case

After some debatably useless discussion with a friend about the best CD case as far as visual aesthetic and functionality we are torn between the normal jewel case and the Digipak. He would like to start printing his art on CD cases so we're hoping for a bit of additional input of some other sources. I'm a pretty big fan of the Digipak, but he prefers jewel cases since the art inside rarely gets damaged, and they are easier to stack.

Any input as to whether you prefer jewel cases, Digipaks, sleeves, or an x-fold wallet would be appreciated.

I just hate looking at cd art through the plastic case. Digipaks make me feel like I'm buying a mini vinyl.

Edit- Another possibility

Not really possible to get on a CD rack but I thought it was special enough to find another purpose.

Jewel case, cause they last longer, while digipacks damage easily. I'm a bit surprised Enshine charge more for the digipack version of their new album over the jewel case. I thought jewel cases were more expensive to make.

Nope, digipaks have always been more expensive to make.

Purely for practical reasons I prefer jewel cases.

For reasons already exposed above, jewelcase for practical reasons, digipacks for esthetic ones.
So, it all depends on which side of the fence you want to stand

Problem with digipacks is that the aesthetic appeal doesn't last. I look after mine quite well but after a while creases in folds and wear on the cardboard makes them start looking worse for wear.

True. But that's why I'm much more careful around them - and also why I rip them in MP3 more quickly than regular CDs (so I use them less - somehow they're more a collectible, come to think of it )

Most of my CDs go right in a binder and the cases go to the shelf so little wear happens there. I really don't mind the wear that happens naturally on cardboard. I'm weird and like vintage looking stuff.

Have to agree with the 'jewel case more practical, digipak more aesthetic potential' view of most people on the thread. I used to hate getting digipaks when I ordered CDs mainly for that reason, but with time I've become more accepting of digipaks

Nope, if the total quantity reaches a certain amount, says 2,000 copies and above, digipak would become cheaper.

Nope, when you print 2000, 3000, 4000, 5000, 6000, 7000, 8000 of each digipak is still more expensive. Actually the more you print the cheaper jewel cases get in comparison to digipaks.

Nope, the plastic case (jewel case) is extra cost, music labels still need to go for offset printing for the innerlay sleeve, there is no more discount from plastic case manufacturer if the quantity reach about 5,000 pcs.

If they go for digipak, the extra cost is only the thicker gsm of the cardboard material, everything is handled by the offset printer, no more plastic material involved. The more you print the cheaper it is.

Don't argue with me, this is not your area...it's is mine.

It is everyone's area.

And you the weakest dry ass here throwing shit around. Certainly, what you said about digipack was absolute nonsensical.

I always prefer a jewel case version for my CD collection. I don't know exactly why, but I also prefer them in terms of aesthetics. Digipaks most of the time look very cheap to me + they probably won't last that long in the state, they're originally purchased (though if you take care of your stuff, this shouldn't be too much of a problem).

Digi pack looks more classy, as said, like a mini vinyl. Like my vinyl they seem to stay in pretty good nick as i'm precious with them and will usually just listen to the mp3. I don't keep them in cd shelves where ya slip them into the slots either which helps.
Jewel cases are good for looking at when your taking a shit though, you can thoroughly study the cd booklet, put it on the floor while you wipe your ass and not get a drip of water, dirty fingers or crap off the floor on it.

Jewel cases for sure.

I love the way it nicely packs in CD case covers with art covering around.

I prefer the look of the digipack cases, but I think jewel cases are far more practical and keep the art in better shape. Overall, I'd go with the jewel cases, as they are far more practical, and digipacks aren't that much better-looking than the jewel cases are.
