Akercocke, from UK.... Play a blackened form of Death Metal... I purchased 'Words that go unspoken...' and really liked it. However i standy by Chorozone as being their best album...

What does everyone else think of this band in general?

ooh - it will probably grow on you if you let it
when i first heard 'Choronzon' i didnt like it half as much as i do now

then if you like it so much you want more - i would recommend their latest - 'Words That Go Unspoken, Deeds That Go Undone'

yup. first time i heard akercocke (believe me or not) was in demo of Earache Extreme Metal Racing, Verdelet was one of the two songs present in it (second was something by Berzerker) and i thought..."hell yeh thats not bad...i like it". so i began looking for the album containing it. at first listen to "Words..." i thought..."well thats good but not something special as Opeth for example" (how wrong I was ). the 2nd song that gripped me was Seduced with its awesome brutal parts and great ending. then Leviathan and Horns of Baphomet then everything by them. nowadays i count Akercocke as one of my all time favourite bands along with Opeth, Wintersun, The Chasm, Necrophagist and such.

so you see, Akercocke gets more intersting with time. every single instrument is playing somethin worth memorizing and altogether they create an unsual original experience.

well Akercocke is pretty technical, thats no question, but its also heavily oriented into atmosphere, dynamic sounds and such. hmm my description sounds much like id be describing Nile...so i think that youll like Akercocke even thought it has slightly "thinner" sound (compared to extremely deep almost like muted guitars of Nile and thundering drumming, not that Akercockes drumming is watered down, hell no, but its different ) too.

here are some links to sites where you can listen to some tracks. dont just listen to one though because the albums are quite different and if you like/dislike one - there is a chance you could like/dislike another from a different album

Best live band on the planet, simple as that! One of my favourite bands. It's hard for me to choose a favourite album out of the most recent 3, but I think "Choronzon" gets it.

Rape of the Bastard Nazarene is a little too crusty for my tastes. I prefer their other three albums, especially their newest. I've always thought that if Opeth made a black metal album, it would sound just like Words That Go Unspoken.

The Goat Of Mendes would be my favourite. Starts of heavy and intense with 'Of menstrual blood and Semen' and just continues. TGOM is the heaviest of the albums, it has far crisper, rawer tempo shifts then there most noted for on Choronzon, and the whole album screams and growls more harmoniously to the music. Giving to the music that extra layer of brutality. Later albums, the music and voicals take on an independant nature like so many bands these days who believe: the better the quality of production, the better the album. Since Choronzon was riddled with doom, slowler paced intersections that broke up the flow. Plus the songs, although well written, never had the intensity that the TGOM album has.

Just and so managed to get through the whole of 'Words That Go Unspoken, Deeds That Go Undone'. What a load of crap, on every level. Feel vindicated.

They did become a mediocre band once fame found them after TGOM.

I have 'The Goat of Mendes' & 'Choronzon', (planning to get 'Words that go unspoken, deeds that go undone' once I bump into it) both are good and interesting, but they could be better. I don't enjoy the songwriting of some songs that much, and some moments just lack... something, good riffs? I dunno.
'Verdelet' is by far the best song I've heard from them, thus I'll check their latest out.

The new album has been leaked and it's pretty fantastic =]

This time round they've taken a slightlier simpler approach and dropped a lot of the prog elements and althought they haven't exactly gone back to basics, it's certainly more death metal than anything else. The production's not as polished as before either though, again, not exactly raw either.

I think they probably had a lot more fun with this album. Instead of pissing and fannying about with a lot of the songs they've taken the road of rather brutal headbanging numbers mixed 'n' spliced some much lighter moments, it really works too. I think I realise now I didn't like 'Words....' as much as I thought I did, I definitely prefer this release.

Axion, My Apterous Angel and The Dark inside are the highlights, the latter being a shockingly upbeat song with plenty of singing, melody and even some rather funky electro moments. Brilliant stuff. The closing track is fucking unusual too, sounds like one of the lighter tracks from an Opeth album, Jason really sings on it!

A much more fun album this time round.

I've seen them twice live now, the second time at The Water Rats in London which was beyond spectacular. They are truly the greatest showmen alive.

Good opinion on the best songs there, although Id have to say, I think the album is best listended to as a whole...

Akercocke played at Rock City last night - the same night Saxon and Masterplan played at the same venue - and because of this, Akercocke sold only 47 tickets!!! I feel sorry for them!!
I really wanted to see them as well (I saw Saxon and Masterplan..) expecially after I heard them soundcheck while I was inside the venue before the show..

Only 47?! They deserve much better. Especially in England. Guess that's what happens when you organize two shows at the same venue in one night..
