Best of metal is a stretch But if I had to pick from these two then it goes to Dave Lombardo To say these two are the best metal has to offer though is a big stretch. What about some of the black metal drummers ie, Frost (1349 & Satyricon). I don't doubt that there are many more that could go into this list easily from a range of genres.

Dave Lambardo, a very very hard choice between these two. But Dave takes the cake thanks to his insanely creative drumming and variety of genres he has handled. My heart is still with Gene though but technically Dave is the better drummer.
