Well, to be fair, his solo project existed before Masterplan... but yeah, he's not too good on his own.

I kind of agree. I think his solo stuff is OK (his voice is good enough to get away with the generic lyrics/music), but his stuff with bands is amazing. It seems like he's better off when somebody else writes the music, and they make him stretch his voice. Compare his stuff with Ark or Beyond Twilight to his solo stuff, and it's almost like he gets lazy when he's on his own.

Exactly. It's one of the classic examples of why artists/bands should NOT have "complete artistic freedom".
