Ten long years after Antichrist, the mighty Akercocke are back. This time they have taken off their suits and the band's renaissance has occurred without sacrificing any goats. Female breasts are also absent and there is no sign of Lucifer worship. But fear not, for their admirable inability to deliver a less-than-extraordinary record is intact.

Well, yeah sure, it was good, but I didn't like it anywhere near as much as the two before it.

How was that disappointing? Maybe not as good as Choronzon and Words, but still good to my ears

Regarding Antichrist: It was a very good album, but a step down from the previous four.

Definitely better than 'Antichrist', and arguably in the same tier as 'Words...'. It's really only getting better with repeated listens.

So much technicality still so much soul and character. Damn, the first track even features the Purdie shuffle.

The vocals are terrible. Such a shame, cause with good vocals this album would have been totally unbeatable.

Too prog rock for my tastes. They probably should have considered a band name change for this album. Ok background music.

I'm loving it. The nuances really come out while blasting the volume. Classic Akercocke, but more prog added into the cake. Less death metal, but not by much. True, some clean vocals are a bit monotone, more so than previous albums, but I think that's the unsettling effect they're going for. It taps into a different emotion I think fits the music. I felt the appreciation came out for the vocals after several spins.

This album flows perfectly while listening to the previous albums. Definitely happy with it.

I don't like this record at all. The vocals were terrible and I think they went a little overboard with the prog elements (I'm not very into prog). 'Goat Of Mendes' will always be their best work in my eyes.

I think the album was great aside from the vocals.

I could have enjoyed this album a lot more were it not for the clean vocals. They're always off-key, out-of-place, and way too exaggerated. I don't think very highly of Akercocke, but I do think Renaissance In Extremis had a reasonable chance to change my opinion. I'd find it pretty listenable if everything had just been growled instead.

Huh, I was again reminded how much I generally like Akercocke vocals on this record. Both clean and especially harsh vocals are pretty great to me.

People thought antichrist was disappointing? Huh. There is no bad akercocke, can't wait to hear this though.

Edit: Very well written album with a nice bit of variation and some excellent musicianship, don't really get the complaints about the vocals either which sounds the same as the previous akercocke albums to me, highly enjoyable overall.

The instrumental is good to great, but ruined by the clean vocals. What kind of ears must one have to realize that this kind of vocals sucks and destroys good music? Gave it a 7, thanks to the fact that the songwriting is strong on this one. Would've went for a 9 if not for the silly clean vocals. Mendonca should step back as a singer, hire a new guy, have one of his bandmates growl on the records or just record instrumentals only. Seriously, it was freaking tedious to listen to this thanks to his vocals.

The growl vocals are much better either.
