Their new album blows. I was quite entertained by Nocturnal back when it came out and thought it was some good stuff but it wore out on me. As for Deflorate, well it really is just unimpressive and very repetitive.

Seriously? Deflorate is the only Black Dahlia album I have ever really enjoyed all the way through. The new guitarist was a necessary addition. There are some seriously brutal tracks and some really good solos.

I find it strange that you keep mentioning the guitars. TBDM has always had pretty lame melodic riffs, and even with the ex-Arsis guitarist, I haven't notiiced any improvement whatsoever. But, I've only listened to their new album on my sound system in my car, which sometimes drowns out the guitars with the bass drums, but still, I haven't been able to notice anything noteworthy in any way with the guitars. Deflorate is mostly highlighted by the drumming. Still, nothing they've done has been able to match the awesomness of Unhallowed, an album which sadly I've grown out of.

Consider this a follow-up to my review of Deflorate for those three people who read it before it was deleted:

After a month or so of pretty laborious listenings, I hereby redact my 8.8 score given to Deflorate (on my now deleted review). I suppose time has cooled my desire to stick up for the band. They are, no matter what the surprisingly high-brow-in-disposition and rather erudite extreme metal elites argue, a melodeath band through and through. Metalcore in method of dress-up only. Nevertheless, this does not mean that TBDM are a good band. While sub-genre distinction may be a source of metal merit, reflecting poorly on the distinction enforcers most, it does not indicate that the music created is anything extraordinary (by my standards of course). TBDM are a good band, not great (not 8.8 worthy I'm afraid). Deflorate is a solid album but, despite having some interesting solos and very solid vocal and drum performances, is nearly devoid of the sort of sheer creative energy (if you would please) that distinguishes the great from the mediocre. It simply does not have the raw punch in the face that I have come to expect from metal albums (or, at least, the metal albums from the bands to whom TBDM clearly emulate). It is, to assign another rather arbitrary number, a creation worthy of nothing more than 8.


(To understand what I mean by sheer creative energy do yourself a favor and check out Here Waits Thy Doom . The creators are not, by most measures, the most technically talented musicians, but the end result is something far more "pure" than the end result of Deflorate. The connection between the two is only in the time-frame within which the two albums were released).

First time hearing them was in Concert. Thought they were pretty decent. Went home and downloaded some and realized they SUCK

Maybe they sucked in other albums but in Nocturnal they did NOT!

After i watched their DVD Majesty, i'm addicted more to this band it seems i'm becoming a fan of TBDM although i was do hate this band so much.

Some of their older work is great. I'm still on the rocks with Ritual though, I need to listen to it a couple more times. I have had the chance to see these guys about 3 times, every show was great. I really dig their new drummer though.

I really like their first album, one of the best At The Gates worship records you can get but their death metally stuff irritates the shit out of me. I just want to burn the vocalist.

Makes me sad that such a band uses a name about one of the best murders I've ever seen pictures of... Their music isn't brutal or nasty enough even to touch the fucked-up-ness of that murder.

Ok so I have listened to the new album 5 times all the way through and I must say that its for sure their worst cd yet.

I think they've grown as musicians and you can hear that on there newer material. At least i think so. Since Ryan Knight joined them on Deflorate they've made a huge leap forward. Listen to this dude's solo's. they're amazing and really take the band to a higher plane. At least i think so

I agree to a point. In all honesty this album sounds like they have taken a step down. They were showing some amazing progress then they were blown back with the new one. A whole new sound in a way, a sound that too many people are already doing.

I don't mind. When i hear something i really like than i don't mind that its something somebody already is doing.

Neither do I, but yet it was a change of pace for the band. Guess that I didn't really expect them ever to release something like this.

Its always a surprise with what they've gonna come up with every time. This time i like it. But who knows what the next will bring wright?

Well i think "Deflorate" was kinda a let down, i really couldn't feel their work in that album, but in the new album they really did a creative work, so the way i see it with "Ritual" TBDM are back.
