Of course we also need a new Rotting Christ topic in the new forum, right?

Rotting Christ is my favourite band by far, and especially their first three full-length albums are my favourites (they don't have ANY bad release, though)

There've been rumors about a new Rotting Christ album for months, but only very few seem to be true:

- the album is in production
- "Last news is that I am still working on the new album and till now it sounds ...really occult, aggressive and as always dark melodic." - Sakis Tolis

Well, I hope it's going to be like Sakis says.

Your opinions about the band?

I have no arms..
I saw them years ago support My Dying Bride and didn't think they were too bad, i've only ever heard Khronos though, what's the new stuff like, any album in particularly worth getting hold of?

Yeah, Sanctus and Theogonia are both superb. I particularly like Theogonia, though it took me a few listens to get into properly. It's an effective combination of elements of their early obscure approach with a more modern sound (though not in a trendy way). It's dark and ominous sounding in places, but surprisingly 'clean' and accessible - even people not into extreme Metal may be interested as there are lots of inventive and memorable riffs and melodies going on.

You're absolutely right.

I think all Rotting Christ albums are accessible in a way, they're not over-the-top aggressive, they always have the melodies in their songs no matter how furious they might sound and it's all balanced out nicely. In the end, the make great songs and great riffs. I actually listened to Theogonia yesterday again and that song Rege Diabolicus is just insane

I don't think I've ever heard Rotting Christ apart from one new track on a terrorizer comp CD once. I see a lot of people praising their older stuff on forums so i'm starting to feel like I've committed some sort of metal crime.

I'll have a look on ebay.

Good point - their early albums were certainly melodic in their own right. R.C. always had their own individual approach to Black Metal which set them apart from the pack. Some of their new material has hints of their old riffing style.. Both the first song on 'Thegonia' and the first song on 'Sanctus..' hark back to the first song on 'Thy Mighty Contract' (The Sign of Evil Existence) with the same kind of drumming and single-string style guitar melody - I wonder if that was a conscious decision to open their two newest albums with a song like that. It's probably only the raw production of Thy Mighty Contract that might be offputting to new listeners, although even then you can hear the instruments clearly enough, and it's not as scathing as certain Scandinavian bands of that time.

I very much enjoyed Theogonia last year, it had an incredibly rich, varied and highly distinctive sound which was very hard to pidgeonhole. Admitedly it's all I've heard from them so I've no idea what they used to sound like.

Seems like Theogonia put them on the map, a lot of people got to know them with Theogonia.

They certainly have much more to offer, all their releases are rich in their own way, except for Sleep of the Angels! It's the only Rotting Christ album I don't like. But it's a matter of taste really.

I advice people to dig into their earlier years and discover albums like Thy Mighty Contract, Non Serviam and Triarchy of The Lost Lovers.

Richard@ I agree about the production of TMC, I mentioned that once in the last album you listened to thread, but it doesn't hurt the album at all, like you said. If you ask me, I kinda like it. Those songs you mentioned are basically tremolo-oriented songs with the strong dumming, they have used that type of structure to open a lot of albums, maybe it's something that says "you're listening to RC" or maybe it's something else. I think those songs work and usually RC do them really well.

I discovered them in a weird way, It was when I wa sloking at the discography of another band right here in MS and sudenly I look at the "Random Album" thing and I see the cover of Sactus Diavolos... I just though that the devil look badass so I needed to see which band was.
That was like some a year before Theogonia was realised.

Awesome band... I just don't know a so much about them. I gonna buy their albums someday.

EDIT:

I'm hearing "Athanati Este" from Sanctus Diavolos... Damn, everytime I hear the intro and the guy scream "UUUHHH!" I get a big orgasm! O.O"
The main riff is just a kick in the ass for me...

This was the first RC song that I could not stop listening to either, and what made me start buying all their albums! I had liked what I heard on their 2002 disc Genesis, but when I heard "Athanati Este," there was no turning back. If I had the song on cassette, I'd have had to replace the damn thing.... it's so foreboding, so intense! And that simple guitar riff it starts off with just circles in my head days after I hear it...

Rotting Christ are with Septicflesh the 2 greatest Greek metal bands! Without any bad release (although I don't like all their stuff - I apreciate it even) they are a hard working band which allways takes a step forward to reach new levels!!

I haven't seen them live but i "follow" their music since their third studio album release "Triarchy of the Lost Lovers" in 1996.I think they are an exceptional band if you think the time they started playing, where they did and how they developed.I think they achieved many things through the years. For anyone that's interested in buying an album I'd suggest something from the first two albums if you like something raw and primitive, the middle albums for very melodic and light taste, or something for the lately releases for dark melodic black metal. So now to come to a conclusion i'd sugggest for the first category "Thy Mighty Contract", for the second category "A Dead Poem" and "Theogonia" for the last category. That doesn't mean the other albums aren't good or they're mild or bad or something like that.My favorite is "Triarchy of the Lost Lovers". "Archon" and "Snowing Still" are the best songs from this album.Back to the 90's they were the most popular songs here in Greece before the band becomes known worldwide.

Khronos is an overlooked album IMO. It has a special sphere and it's dark as hell.
Sanctus Diavolos also is great and he last one is super.
Must admit that I didn't hear their first efforts. Shame on me...
