I was not sure whether to put this thread in the Melodic Metal or in the General Music thread. I decided to put it there since the band is on Metal Storm. Feel free to move it if need be.

I personally love that band and wanted to see what people thought of them. In my opinion, Steve Wilson is a genius. As of right now, I particularely love Shesmovedon, Lazarus and The Sound of Muzak.

Ah, all the tracks you mentioned are definite greats. My favourite album is 'In Absentia'. 'Blackest Eyes', is probably my favourite Porcupine Tree song. It's such a greater opener as well. That album is actually in my CD player as I type this. Steven Wilson is a great creative man. 'Deadwing' was a great listen as well.

As you picked up, good choice!

I'll also like to say that I'm currently into the song 'Even Less'. Thoughtful lyrics.

They changed a lot over the years, so depending on what aspects of In Absentia/Deadwing you liked, you might be dissapointed. Their more recent stuff (late 90s and on) sounds pretty different from the old stuff. Lightbulb Sun and Stupid dream are closer to In Absentia/Deadwing so I would start with those if I were you.

I've heard a few of their older tracks and I like them as well. Dislocated Day, Burning Sky, and It Will Wain For A Million Years are the ones I know for sure that I've listened to. I was actually a bit dissapointed with Deadwing on my first listen, but it grew on me and I've come to like it.

Porcupine Tree is one of my favorite bands! Steven Wilson is such an awesome guy, he's a genius!

I don't really know if I prefer their old stuff or their new stuff. I like it both!
Fact is that if you like Pink Floyd or their style, then you might love their old stuff. Somebody once said that The Sky Moves Sideways is almost like a copy of Wish You Were Here. I don't agree with that, but it definitely sounds a lot like it (Which isn't a bad thing).
The Sky Moves Sideways is one of my favorite albums of this band, together with In Absentia. And I guess I really like Up The Downstair as well.
I love the very atmospheric and dreamy stuff, but the heavy parts are great too.
I think it's the diversity of this band that makes them outstanding.

I haven't heard way to much my them, I have Stars Die, Stupid Dream (I have a copy from the original release :O), Voyage 34 and the two latest ones, but from what I've heard this is definately one of my favourite progressive bands, and besides metal I'd say my favourite band. I'm also going to see them live at Sweden Rock Festival in a couple of weeks, wow, that will definately be an experience!

Yeah it will! Porcupine Tree is really great live! They perform their songs perfectly and everything is great! Steven has a good sense of humour too. And sometimes they play extended version of their songs.

The thing I like in this band , is that they can really play music. All their previous, psihedelic albums are very good, the new ones, well, I like them two, but I prefer the old ones.

I love Porcupine Tree! I haven't heard much of their music but from what I heard, I like...I have a couple of their albums...Deadwing, The Sky Moves Sideways and Lightbulb Sun...great stuff...I was told to get In Absentia...apparently Steven Wilson has a lot of negative things to say about the modern symphonic progressive metal movement...

Steven Wilson can get really critical, but especially about himself.
He's really tired of The Sky Moves Sideways and other old stuff from himself. And I don't get it, because I absolutely love it.
But heh, that's just the critic in him. I think he's always searching for unique and special music. When he started to listen to metal he found Opeth, Dillinger Escape Plan and Meshuggah. It's not a coincidence that those bands are quite unique.

That those bands were the unique ones in the scene. He only named those as example though, he probably found more bands.
And I haven't checked it yet, but according to a friend of me Steven is seen wearing a Dillinger Escape Plan T-shirt on Opeth's Lamentations DVD.

Awesome band. I don't regard it as metal, but I don't care what it is... it's well thought-out music and it's very interesting indeed. In Absentia was very interesting, but so were ALL their albums... a band that never seems to get old for me.

What album did that friend gave you? It shouldn't be too hard to get into them, but if it isn't like their newest albums then it might be harder.
Deadwing is a very good album and it's very diverse. You should give it some more tries then. And listen to 'Arriving Somewhere, But Not Here'.

I'm just re-discovering this band, and I'm totally overdone, this music just simply takes my breath away. I was listening to 'The Sky Moves Sideways' for three days now, almost 72 hours, and it still amazes me, and acts like a drog.

Porcupine Tree is IMO THE reference when you're talking about prog/rock !

They have released some good album especially those 5 last years. Leading the band you got the genius Steven Wilson himself... what more do you ask for? This man is really great, he plays like 5 instruments really well, he composes really meaningful and beautiful lyrics, he sings like an angel and to finish he is an excellent producer (produced Deliverance and Damnation for Opeh and is going to produce the new Orphaned land some references here people..)

I, like many people here, prefer their last albums In Absentia and Deadwing and particularly Deadwing which was with Ghost reveries Imo the best album of 2005! Steven Wilson often writes engaged lyrics which does sound good with the music that the band proposes...

My favourite songs from this band are Blackest Eyes, the Sound Of Muzak, Halo, well in fact the whole Deadwing album is joy to my ears... But their first albums were great too not the same stuff , much heavier and experimental but really good too

A really great band!

Yeah, he is wearing a DEP tshirt.

One thing that I think is great about Porcupine Tree is that the lyrics are so simple yet they are s thoughtful. Check out the lyrics for 'Train' or any of the tracks on In Absentia for an example of what I mean.

The new Pink Floyd? I believe so! One of my favourite bands of all time. They just signed RR as you guys might know, so I hope they will get the recognition and respect they always derserved. Steven Wilson really is a genius, he can play almost any instrument and is a fantastic producer as well. They have put out some amazing albums, but my favourites would have to be The Sky Moves Sideways and Stupid Dream, essentiel PT records. Deadwing is also among my favourites, I had no idea it would turn out so good as it did. Alot of bands tend to make some poor albums when they have been around for some years, PT are not one of those. I hope they will do a world tour some time, maybe with Opeth now that they are on the same label. Id kill to see them both live.
