One may have all kinds of opinions regarding Mayhem's varied discography in terms of quality. But one thing has always been a fact to yours truly: They never released an unnecessary album in 35 fucking years.
I disagree. To me it kind of reminds me of a more elegant Chimera and I can see how it works.
I'm with you, I dig it. Mayhem's cover arts have been pretty varied across the board anyway so it's not like they even have a specific style, which suits the fact their music is also similarly varied.
I think you are right. I expected more sophisticated cover.
Not really sure what you consider "sophisticated," but this is clearly the most sophisticated of their covers as far I can see it. I mean, it's an actual painting for one thing that probably wouldn't look out of place in the Romantic era.

ok. I hope the music of this album will great. Sorry but the cover doesnot fits Mayhem style to me.
Oh God Worthless Abomination Destroyed sounds straight out of dmds. Officially lost my hopes for this album. The drums are so annoying. Too early to judge, but seems like they went for a clone of their old sound.

To me it sounded a bit like a watered down Liber from BaN's discog. I guess the Liber records were inspired by older school black metal though, so swings and roundabouts.
"Officially Lost hope". Jeez people going out way early. I still remember some folks who complained about the first single from Esoteric Warfare and then eating the shit out of it when the full album was released. Let's wait.
This is why Im never a fan of checking out songs. I take the full album in one go thank you very much.

They mentioned going back to their roots, so don't be surprised when it sounds like... their roots.
Although I guess after hearing most other bands say they're going back to their roots before every. single. album. it has kind of lost its meaning.
I loved the song. It's definitely a departure from the last two records (as far as one can tell from one song) but that's not a bad thing in itself.

I don't lose hope over albums if the singles are just poor in quality. The problem is that I don't think I will ever be impressed with this style of black metal, and I don't think mayhem is going to put an album with songs that are not consistent when it comes to the style. This is as if they would had released a blackgazs song. I don't like that style and I would had be disappointed.

True, but then again the libers, especially liber ii had this dense production combined with totally unhinged disonace going on that made them so great. This song just lacks any adventurous edge.
Curious to see where they go now if this is indeed gonna be something of a departure from the Ordo Ad Chao/Esoteric Warfare sound
---- I am the Magician and the Exorcist. I am the axle of the wheel, and the cube in the circle. “Come unto me” is a foolish word: for it is I that go.
New song all but confirms this album is going to be dud. Didn't expect that from these guys, but I'll still see if the album as a whole holds something decent.
Loving this one. It's some creepy evil black metal with great vocals and audible bass. Sure, fans of OAC and EW might find this too "normal," but for a straightforward black metal album, this is perfectly executed.
This is the best album Mayhem has put out since De Mysteriis. I've listened all the way through the album 3 times now, and I don't see my rating changing at all.
I'm not a big fan of Mayhem, but I did love DMDS. I feel this album bridges the gap quite nicely between their early sound and some of the more experimental stuff they did afterwards. So, in my book, it may well be their best album since DMDS.
It's difficult to re-invent yourself with every release. Then again, it's also difficult to write the second part of the best black metal album in the history of black metal and not fall flat on your face. And Mayhem didn't. Daemon is indeed a return to roots and the band was clearly influenced by the fact that they played the whole DMDS live for a long time. However, it does feature many elements of stuff they did after that album.
In terms of performances, Attila is summoning the dark forces of the universe, both when he shrieks from the crypt and when he's using his trademark operatic diabolical vocals. The bass is audible and tasty, the riffs are interesting and memorable. The atmosphere is frightening and hellish. My only grudge is with the drums; Hellhammer is -and always will be- a black metal drumming god, but it's clear that he has put minimal effort in this.
Daemon is what the band said it is on the press release: "an opportunity for the maw of hell to open wider". Nothing more, nothing less. Works for me.
