Well... best metal guitarist thread, i've listened to a lot of guitarists, many hours of listening make me create this short 6 guitarists list... i'm letting out some names (like randy rhoads, alexi laiho, luca turilli), i know it... but here are my 6, maybe all of you metalstormers out there have many more guys to put in this list... but... well, criteria used was versatility, skills, technique, discipline and creativity... with all that said, i give my vote to Yngwie because, he has built all his career around his guitar, and he's for sure a guitar god..

My vote goes to Petrucci.
Between i have downloaded some video guitar lessons, from him, and hes a maniac. Recomend to everyone

Well, in my ever humble opinion, none of the above mentioned guitarists are the best ever. But if I were to choose one from the list, whom I thought was better than the rest, it would be none other than Yngwie "I'm better than you" Malmsteen. His style is so unique in light of the overall sound. The other guys mentioned are clever...but not so much in technique, but as in speed and flare.

Out of that list Steve Vai is the best well IMO, but i like Muhammad from Necrophagist.

i haven't voted because for me is a hard decision between Yngwie and Petrucci. i think both of them have a creative style and i have learned some things that have helped a lot playin guitar.

Ok...I dont even know where to start...First of all...why isnt Michael Angelo Batio listed here? He is one of the fastest guitar shredders of all time and he is one of the best guitar players in the whole world!!! He received a bachelor's degree in music theory and composition...
also he is not ambidextrous, but he has taught himself to play two guitars at the same time (and he isnt listed here) either in synchronized or separate harmonies...He also invented and successfully played the very first 'quad' and double custom guitar...also, he invented the inverted hand guitar playing technique...I mean, Guitar One magazine named Batio the #1 fastest shredder in the world in April 2003...Isnt that enough?...you probably dont even know who he is...right? Why is Petrucci listed here anyways?

Anyways...Ill vote for Yngwie, because of his awesome sweep picking technique and neoclassical compositions, he is a talented musician and a great songwriter!!!

at the beggining, i said this were the 6 guitarist i consider who must be here, and i also said that many people will have their guys, and there nothing i can do about it, because the list would go to 10, 20 names... but thanx for your advice... BTW i do know who is Michael Angel Batio, guitarist of nitro...but anyway thanx for the links... and Michael Romeo(Symphony X), is a hell of a guitarist, but he's not here by the same reasons i said up... but thanx for the suggestions

You can't really say who's the best guitarist ever...it's pointless or it's like comparing a car with a motorbike, yes they both run on petrol, both have wheels and both are constructed by humans, but after all they aren't that similar from other points of view. You can say who's the fastest guitarist, the guitarist you like best the guitarist with the best compositions from your point of view, but the best certanly you can't do that because of one simple thing diffrent tehniques, diffrent sound.

For me the "best" guitarists are: K.K. Downing & Glenn Tipton (some of the nicest & beautiful solos & riffs), Hideto Matsumoto (from X Japan), Zakk Wilde (which I don't like how he plays the guitar, but is an inventive guitarist) and I could name some other good guitarists.

From your list i voted for Marty Friedman, because i simply love his solos. He just has a really great sound, although he is not my favorite guitarist...
My favorite must go to either Anri Lanvall, Alex Skolnick, or Al Pitrelli.

Steve Vai isn't a metal guitarrist. I've voted John Petrucci I love him and I think he's the best in the metal scene I miss Michael Romeo and Mattias "IA" Eklundh in that list!!

My personal favorites are Yngwie Mawmstein, Trey Azgthoth, Karl Sanders, Alexi Laiho and Jerry King.
I havent listened to the other options enough to really say, but there a gazillion amount of great guitarists out there, so the question for me would be, which style do you like the best?

I Cant vote for these guys because Michael Romeo (Symphony X) is the best metal guitarist

I have no clue whether he actually is the best guitarist of the lot,
but he is an amazing guitarist nonetheless. I remember how awe-
struck I was when my older brother (may he rest in peace) intro-

given the choices, i went with Petrucci. i like his style a lot better than the rest. i'd follow right behind him with friedman or vai

I would love to see a serious critique of Petrucci's technique by you. The word serious is an important adjective.

Petrucci is so much more than a shredder. He is quite possibly the world's most balanced metal guitarist. He plays in numerous keys, modulates through numerous keys, hits precise chords, picks precise rythymn, and uses a variety of tones and plays a variety of styles.

Since when is Petrucci just speed and flair? Last I knew, he was a musician all about technique with no stage prescence. That's according to metalheads.

...For some reason I really don't care who is "best" on the above list. You might notice that it is a matter of opinion, rather than fact. The minute there is concrete proof, produced by an seriously infalable scientific study into the "greatest of guitarists" -get back to me.

On a closing, side note: I personally can play John Petrucci arrangments, I can't play Malmsteens. Though, again, 'tis another case of opinion resulting from personal preferance.

Ill agree with the last post about the candidates. I was around when Yngwie was current in about 1982. The man intriduced a style and sound that was UNHEARD OF. There was not a guitarist on planet earth who sounded and played like him.
Yes he is an egotistical person, but so what. Also in the same time period we had tony Macalpine and Vinnie Moore whos solo efforts are out of this world. And last but not least Randy Rhodes,

Shrapnel records found many great guitarists in the 80s what a good period. !!

Well, my favourite is Miika Tenkula from Sentenced. Because of his skills and technique. He is an good musican and creates some beautiful solos.

@Aresius: i do understand your point, and i think that is the most reasonable commentary, that i've ever heard, i knew when i created this thread, this poll... i knew that this was going to be a polemical issue, and that people were going to ask for more and different(and of course.. awesome) guitarists... i must accept that this is a very polar poll, because is mainly my opinion and my likes, what are being reflected here... but anyway, i must admit, that many of the technical, shredders and any kind of other guitarist mentioned here, are just very good, and it has opened my eyes for good, so lets just keep i there... anyway someone, someday have to create this poll, so it was better to get rid of that quickly

I think I've seen the same video and it was more than impressive.
My vote goes to Petrucci. He can make such beautiful compositions and plays in a variety of styles, keys and utilizes different techniques.

I voted for Steve Vai... I don't listen to him anymore, bit I really think he has skill... but on an aesthetic level, I'd put my money elsewhere.

I go for John Petrucci, great technique.
