Well... best metal guitarist thread, i've listened to a lot of guitarists, many hours of listening make me create this short 6 guitarists list... i'm letting out some names (like randy rhoads, alexi laiho, luca turilli), i know it... but here are my 6, maybe all of you metalstormers out there have many more guys to put in this list... but... well, criteria used was versatility, skills, technique, discipline and creativity... with all that said, i give my vote to Yngwie because, he has built all his career around his guitar, and he's for sure a guitar god..

Poll

Which of these guitarist it's the best ever?

John Petrucci
68
Yngwie Malmsteen
65
Steve Vai
42
Marty Friedman
31
Timo Tolkki

Paul Gilbert

well i think that this thread is more of who's your favorite metal guitarrist because you really can't say who's the best. this is a very hard decision of that list i would choose steve vai, he is so original, so versatil and i think he would play anything is he wants but you're missing a lot of guitarrist out there, and well this is my choose

excuse me for my bad english xD

They are the best for me with John petrucci and Timo Tolkki but I prefer Timo that touch at the speed light.

I don't care what anybody says Andre Olbrich of Blind Guardian is the best metal guitar player. He may not be the fastest or the most technical guitar player there is in metal but he writes the most amazing melodic leads I have ever heard in my life. He also plays with alot of feeling with his leads. I'm not that intrested in his solos although they are great but for me nothing compares to his leads anyone can write mindless technical solos if they know anything about musical theory but to able to write such lead melodies is a completely different thing IMO.

Very, very, very, very, very good point. André Olbrich rules, he's my favourite guitarist. I'd still say Vai's the 'best' guitarist - he's got the originality, the technique, the emotion, everything.

I voted for Vai, he rules. but your forgot Michael Romeo from Symphony X and Herman Li from DragonForce.

Those two shouldn't be compared to Vai, since (a) they don't have the emotion in their solos; (b) their stuff isn't exactly the most taxing to compose, and (c) because they both rate Vai higher than any other guitarist themselves.

As for André Olbrich, I couldn't include him, because Blind Guardian shouldn't ever be compared to fellow mortals. They, as a band, are several cuts above the rest.

I was not comparing them to Vai. They're great guitar players, that's all.

Kiko Loureiro has a lot more of feeling in his solos than Petrucci and Tolkki.
Petrucci is a robot playing the guitar, it's just my opinion. Kiko Loureiro also plays very fast but not losing the melodic part and that's the problem of Dream Theater to me. Kiko has amazing solos that are fast and melodic, Petrucci can't do that. So Loureiro sorprises me a lot more than Petrucci does. Timo Tolkki plays fast solos but he doesn't play emotive solos with a lot of feeling. Kiko Loureiro and Steve Vai for me are the best examples of what is a complete guitar player.
Note: This is only my opinion and I know that a lot of people doesn't agree with me.

You make some good points, Pianoman. Kiko is truly awesome - his technique is amazing, his playing evocative, his tone impeccable. He certainly deserves more credit than he is given.

John Petrucci gets my vote because there is no denying his ability,
He went to Burklee and I think graduated in the top ten of his class,
co-founded the first Prog Metal Band, Dream theater, and is just absolutely
amazing.

Metal guitarist? Well,I don't consider all of the guitarists featured on the list metal guitarists, but out of them,my favorite is Steve Vai,even though I don't consider him a metal guitarist. I like Yngwie too, sometimes a bit too repetitive though. Friedman and Petrucci are both awesome,Friedman has a great unique style. Petrucci is a maestro, but sometimes he's not very intresting. Still one of the leading virtuosos of the world. Timo Tolkki is my least favorite out of these. He's a great guitarist, but doesn't hold my intrest in the same way as the rest do. One of Finland's best though and he can do all kinds of cool stuff with music. Gilbert is a monster player, but his music isn't that intresting always. But a magnificent guitarist and has a great sense of humor.

This was kinda hard for me to do. Yngwie is the best shredder, but his solo albums aren't very interesting and his melodies aren't anything too special. From the list, I voted for John Petrucci because he is the most well-rounded from the list. He can shred, but more importantly, he can write a good song. His solo album, Suspended Animation, is brilliant. It's one of the few instrumental albums I can listen to and enjoy.

My favorite guitarist is Dimebag though. No one even comes close to him in regards to writing heavy riffs.

Edit: well, now that I think about it, Jeff Loomis is definitely close to the top as well. Like Dimebag, he basically is the only consistant guitarist in his band, Nevermore, and he writes pretty much all of the songs. Plus, that dude can shred a 7 string.

co-founded the first Prog Metal Band, Dream theater

Fates Warning predates Dream Theater by three years.

I voted for Marty Friedman. However, not a single one of those in the poll has the versitility of Mattias IA Eklundh. I will hold my tongue concerning technical ability because I'm sure somebody here will tell me that Eklundh couldn't keep up with Vai or something like that, but the man's skill is mindblowing, but he doesn't masturbate with it. The Road Less Traveled is one of the most diverse, weirdest, and most technical albums I've ever heard.
