By now, you have all likely heard the sad news that Marcel Hubregtse, one of our longest-standing staff members and a fixture around Metal Storm for many years, has passed away. As is known to everyone who spent even a few minutes on Metal Storm, Marcel had a passion for pushing doom and introduced many of us to countless bands and albums of the highest quality; Marcel had a bottomless well of knowledge when it came to the music he loved, and he shared that with us all quite a lot.

Right now, the rest of the Metal Storm staff are working on a more formal tribute to Marcel behind the scenes, but we thought it would be an appropriate way for all MS users at large to memorialize Marcel if we could share in this thread some of the albums and bands that Marcel introduced us to. We can revisit these albums in his honor or maybe check out some new artists he recommended to others.

The biggest one for me is, as might be expected, Warning's Watching From A Distance. When I joined this site not even halfway into high school and I thought I knew a thing or two about doom, he put me in my place with that album. Over the years, it has become one of my favorites.

So go ahead. Talk about the music that Marcel loved to talk about and let's raise a craft beer in his honor.

Probably would not have discovered three Dutch black metal bands that I'm a huge fan of were it not for Marcel: Urfaust, Laster, and Dodecahedron.

Warning is the obvious one. When joining the site and browsing the lists, seeing that painting of the guy walking/crawling uphill topping his list; it's probably an experience a lot of people had who joined or discovered Metal Storm in the 2010's. His list also introduced me to what became one of my favourite bands of all time; Alchemist.

More personal recommendations included advising me to go see Hangman's Chair and The Vintage Caravan at Roadburn, which I promptly ignored and later regretted. Luckily I got to see both bands afterwards and both were great concerts that I would never have gone to if not for Marcel. He also knew my home country's metal scene better than I did and pointed out my error when I foolishly included Serpentcult in my Best Of Belgian Metal list but not Thee Plague Of Gentlemen.

The last time I saw him was at Dutch Doom Days 2018. He was DJ'ing in between bands. After the last band ended I heard some really fucking jolly music playing and when I went back into the bar area I could see him and some guys drunkenly smiling and singing along. I didn't say hi that time, thinking I'd see him again loads of times anyway since I lived so close to the Netherlands and he goes to pretty much all the good shows there. I only met him a handful of times before that, but I wish I had known him better.

I wouldn't even know where to begin. My foray into the extreme side of metal is a direct result of his influence and constant badgering in the forums. I came here a fan of Slipknot, Metallica, Static-X, Disturbed, Limp Bizkit, etc. and over the years gave bands and genres the time and effort they deserved just from reading some of his comments on the site. I owe a great deal of my personal growth and musical preferences to him, even though so much of what we enjoyed didn't mesh.

We'll always have Erosion by Process Of Guilt.

Like Troy, I honestly don't really know where to begin. i started to try and compile a list of albums he sent me, or directly recommended me to comb through... it's probably 200+ of my collection. Just those I owned physically or paid for digitally.

an attempt...

Ahab
Akelei
Capilla Ardiente
FAAL
Forsaken
Officium Triste
Ortega
Process of Guilt
Procession
Profetus
Warning

And that is just the tip of the doom iceberg he actually physically sent to me, along with countless shirts and my beloved Ortega hoodie.

Great albums I discovered because of him were:
Process of Guilt - Erosion
Warning - Watching from a distance

But for me it was more all the little details he contributed about the bands' members, their motivation, about the evolution of it all, from which I gained so much insight.

Thanks, Marcel, now rest in peace.

Like many Msers, I only checked Warning or 40 Watt Sun because of his great doom proselytism, besides other bands.

Just like Apothecary, I got to know Urfaust thanks to him.

This one is the most memorablethough. Simply because I started listening to it and just couldn't get into it. But it was because of how enthusiastic Marcel was talking about it, that I gave it another chance. Damn is it a good album when I'm in the mood for it. I'm so glad I gave it a second chance thanks to Marcel.

Another think how Marcel affected my ms live and metal live positivly was DDD. Damn I love his articles how sm crew was there, and intro part about travel, beers and sleep in his aparment whit rat poop lol
Since he start talk about that fest every year many bands and some new bands I did not know before, and I start add all bands in MS; because I love work whit ms database. Thanks to Marcel I had some things to do in boringf times in ms. Spend ours whit good music and eding bands, doing what I like
DDD is fest what I wanted attend and never did because of travel expences, its expencive and also Ned is not cheep, and now if I will attend, it wont be a same anymore
