I watched the show before I knew it was based on books but few months ago I started to read the first book (haven't had the chance to read anything besides study materials ever since) and I guess I'm glad I already knew what all characters look like. anyway, recently I spotted the other four books in a bookstore and I think I'll make an exception and buy them (I rarely buy fiction books as I just read them once and then put away, so what's the point of that?)... winter's the coolest season for reading books.

plus, if one's worrying about the language... well, um, practice makes perfect, right? reading books is one of the best ways how to improve your knowledge in any language.

The two things they have going for them are Henry and the source material.

I hate to be "that guy" but to me those are reasons not to check it out

I can understand Your distaste for Mr Cavill, if for no other reason than him having portrayed Superman in 3 of the worst films ever made. I happen to like him though. It's not his fault that Zack Snyder and DC can't write a script or characters to save their lives.

P.S. I am not trying to put words in Your mouth, so... if you dislike Mr Cavill for some other reason, just pretend I said nothing.

I watched the first two episodes. Dialogue is ridicilous, with a slow and melodramatic delivery. I'm hoping it will go full-on cheese and fantasy, and not take it too seriously. Seemed pretty heavy-handed in portraying racial relations etc. too. I've read the first Witcher book (with the short stories), and it was pretty bad - I was taken aback by just how derivative and not original the setting and stories were, despite acclaim to the exact contrary. Really turned off by the pseudo-historicism. But we'll see how it turns out!

No you are (partially) right. Although I have to admit I only saw Man Of Steel and didn't bother with DC movies after that. I think I saw Cavill in something else where I didn't like him though, but I can't recall off the top of my head.

The Witcher is pretty naff, but I have to admit I'm quite enjoying it. Cavil is a great Geralt. I think the dialogue and acting in the games is generally a lot sharper, but the fairly liberal use of fantasy elements makes it quite watchable, and having only played Witcher 2 and 3 it's quite good to watch for their origins without putting in any effort.

Similarly, I'm enjoying The Mandalorian too. As someone else said, it's a 100 million dollar show about nothing, but as far as space westerns go it gets pretty far on its cinematography, effects and situational scenarios alone. It'll have to focus on an actual plot next series though.

I also really enjoyed the first season of The Witcher. It's the kind of cheesy goodness that I don't have to take too seriously. I'd say it's a better watch than the last four seasons of GoT for sure. The best things about it are definitely Cavill as Geralt and Joey Batey as Jaskier/Dandelion, though the cast is almost all very good. I just wish the characters and plot points were given more room to breathe and it wouldn't all move forward so quickly. Also, as others have pointed out, the fightscnes are overchoreographed and edited. Overall though, good stuff.

I love South Park for tackling everything... and looking at both sides of an issue when doing so. See also: Always Sunny.

And it's also incredibly consistent, the last episodes were fucking awesome, especially the trans athlete one.

Ah, a man of culture.
Same here, some have described The Wire as the Dostoevsky of TV Shows
Seen it five times. Stuff is still great. You might enjoy Treme too then (but needs to be watched fully preferably)

I gave up a few episodes into 3. went way beyond my ability to suspend disbelief coupled with the need to incorporate any hashtag trending on twitter into the story. would have been best with just the first caper.

even having a guy named Bogota rock a Slayer shirt wasn't enough to keep me.

Wholly this.

The graph is down since S1. You bring Ryan Reynolds for doofus crossover and show alienating towards stitching inter-personal relationships(back then Tokio, Monica and now Nairobi) sabotaging a story timeline.

Great to watch Helsinki and Professor.

La Casa de Papel was only enjoyable during the first couple of seasons. A cute telenovela / anonymous mix that in S3 went so ridiculously p.c. that I wanted to vomit from my eyeballs and chose to just quit watching.

Currently watching The Deuce, great TV show from the creators of The Wire. Themes are about prostitution, police corruption (like The Wire duh) and the golden era of pornography (1970-1984)

It's slow-paced (also like The Wire) but worth it.

Too late to board, I just started watching Chernobyl.

temporarily back in the US, HBO access - finally watched it. was mighty interesting. Vaguely recall a lot of the coverage of it back in the day. Started taking Russian in HS the summer immediately following the meltdown, so a lot of the info came out during the course of my studies over the years.

Also ripped through a slew of other series, usually more comedic.

Marvelous Miss Maizel or whatever - funny dialog (Gilmore Girls) style, nice look back at the late 50s. While female-centric, Tony Shalhoub's character is my fave. At least the first couple seasons.

Silicon Valley - finally got through end of it. Watched most of the first couple seasons via a dodgy website while in Paraguay before it was taken down/compromised. Loved it. Great ending.

Hanna - watching now, reminds of me The Walking Dead - first season mighty intriguing, lot goes one. Second seasons parallel with a lot of nothing. At least thus far. Two episodes have basically felt like Groundhog's Days of the one immediately prior.
