...and here it is

With much pontificating on whether to even start this one, (due to the anticipation of a major headache), I present to you the official thread of the 2008 U.S. Presidential election. I am just too damn interested in seeing what everyone (U.S. and non-U.S. citizens alike) thinks. I would like for all of us to approach this in an atypical matter. DO NOT discuss petty issues that are discussed every day by various media outlets. (Abortion, Same-Sex Marriage, Etc.) Such issues have been presented to us with intent to take our minds off of things that are actually important.

Feel free to grace us with your opinions of the Political Candidates, Political Debates, Important Issues such as solutions for Iraq, The role that the U.S. will play in the world, Etc. Try also not to look only 4 years into the future...that is what has gotten the U.S. into so much trouble in the past...

Go 'lite' on posting or quoting tons of links to other sights. Everything should come from yourself...and please keep the personal insults to a minimum...we all (hopefully) have the same goal to make the world a better place. Unfortunately that peace is currently being halted by greedy politicians. Remember to keep the big question in mind: What political figure would be the best for the entire Global community and why? Go at it fools!

Has anyone noticed the unintentional symbolism between these 2 guys? mccain is a rusty old white dude leaning to the right wing(conservatism), and obama is the younger half-black guy leaning more towards the left wing(liberalism).

Obama won but he DOESN'T lean more towards the left wing. Have you actually rea dwhat he stands for? He is against hom marrriage, he is for gunonwership he is for more miliatray in Afghanistan. I my book those are all right wing points.

The USA doesn'thave a lfetwing though like we do have in Europe. The leftwing is actually fucking rightwing in Europe.

I was sleeping at 1 am when he won, and my friend got me up to tell me. It was awsome. I heard some crazy shit about celebration parties the next day.

I saw those celebration parties on tv but I really cvan't understand them at all. Obama won't be that much of a difference compared to the Republicans.
For me the US are actually a ONE party state instead of a two party stae cause leftwing Republican is a Democrat and a rightwing Democrat is a Republican. It is all more of the same with some slight nuance differences, that's it.

While most people are rejoicing that Obama will become the next president I can't help but feel a little strange about the citation. What concerns me is how fanatical people are about this man. Sure, it is one thing to wave a banner with your candidates name on for all to see, it is another to drive around the city with a cardboard cutout sitting in your passenger seat. It is fine to wear a button or a t-shirt to show your support, it is another to tattoo Mr. Obama's face on your arm. It might even be fine to put a picture up in your store window but not repaint the outside of your building with images of the the president-elect dressed as Superman.

And yes, I have seen all these things in my city.

I think people on both sides are overreacting, Republicans are running scared and Democrats are screaming change. My military buddies are all upset because they think they are going to lose their jobs but I don't really think anything is going to happen. I have no faith in politicians whatsoever.

once in a while there comes a public figure that gets people excited about politics. IF kennedy would have been elected the response would be the same. You also cannot deny the fact that for black people this is a historic moment, and if you would be african american yourself I guess you would feel a lot more passionately about the importance of the moment.

That may be very true. One of my co-workers is a black American and was a huge Obama supporter from the very beginning. For me, I grew up in a small town in New York State. I didn't know about racism until it was taught in history class. Racism just didn't exists where I grew up. And it was not an all white town either, about 1/3 was Asian or Indian and 1/4 or more was black. But when I moved down to North Carolina it was a huge eye opener. Racism does exists down here. So I am still trying to understand racism, and maybe that is why I don't fully grasp the whole Obama thing.

Written by akatana on 06.11.2008 at 21:48

It is strange to hear you say that people get so excited about somebody when you christians are known to get extremely fanatical about jesus while arguing that he was such a charismatic man that the crowds followed him ecstatically.

Could we please have a conversation where you are not insulting my faith or religion? Is it possible?

BAHAMA FOR OBAMA!!!!!

I'm happy he won. Most people at work today were happy too.

But Bahamians freak out over this kind of stuff though, on the radios a victory party for Obama was being advertised. My co-worker said that in his area people were tooting their horns at 11PM in celebration!! you'd SWEAR it was OUR election! haha

Same here ... people are going ballistic over this election. Christ, there wasn't this much controversy over our federal elections which took place just a few weeks prior, lol. They were even showing videos on the news of people in Germany who were celebrating over Obama's win ... but I guess it's understandable; this decision effected the globe.

That and the conervatives won our federal election, theres no celebrating over that.

Anyway, like most Europeans I want to congratulate the us for this election and for finding it's character again.

Now I hope you of all people taka wouldn't have blind faith in this man like a lot of people here in the United States do. It's almost ironic how fundamental you are with liberalism in contrast to your obvious opposition to people of faith and them incorporating that into their political beliefs, maybe how you incorporate your own faith (or lack thereof) in your beliefs? I of course respect your opinion, highly, but don't be so quick to judge what has not been done or can not be seen as of yet.

Well, the South Park episode was great, it's all that matters

Sorry for the spam, but the episode really was brilliant, completely unpredictable. And it also quite well made fun of the people's reactions after the elections.

And all those who don't share the joy, consider at least that if Obama hadn't won, Palin would have been a vice president. And that is already a reason for being really glad.

Yeah, I'm still dumbfounded that our country is putting the power into the hands of Stephen Harper, its almost as if everyone has completely lost their minds. Sure, I like the idea of not being able to afford healthcare because our healthcare program is scrapped, I like the idea that my family could get financially fucked by his plans to privatize Canada Post, not to mention I love the idea of having to work 10-12 hour days just to afford a crummy 1 bedroom apartment because the conservatives seem to not give a shit about the obvious housing problem out here. Not to mention increased military spending and decreased child care programs, we need dumber children and more guns.
But most of all I really love class seperation, it creates such a friendly world.

Anyways a little more back to the topic, its kind of funny how the US is taking a more left-wing path now, and the conservatives are taking our country into a more right wing direction.

Everyone in Canada smokes pot now, not just teenagers, (its perfectly normal to go to a friends house and see their parents smoking a doobie). So I'm pretty sure there will be a bloody coupe before we let them tighten the grip, seeing as we're on the virge of legalizing it at this point.

I actually figured that most people had voted Conservative last time because of that huge scandal that happened with the Liberals. It's pretty surprising that people still voted Conservative, and it's pretty lame that we're stuck under Stephen Harper's rule for another four years. But I dunno, admittedly some of Stéphane Dion's points were really far out ... like wtf? Taxing people who pollute in massive amounts? They're prolly gonna spend so much money trying not to cause pollution/waste, none of it's gonna come back to us ultimately (although yeah, it'll make things nicer, but still). Nevertheless, I would've preferred the Liberals (and above all else) the NDP, but the NDP's never gonna fucking win, lol.

I am surprised that you would think so little of me. I told you that regarding political views, Obama I is still too right wing for me. I will be very critical of him. But mycongratulations were referring to the us people electing an intelligent man into office on grounds of political change not on the grounds of boys kissing and abortion.

I have a feeling that Obama is more liberal then he makes himself out to be. Just by looking at his plans you can see that he's as leftwinged as he possibly can be in the neoconservative breeding ground (know as America); if he went any farther the general population would probably draft him as a commie lol. Even now he's still called a socialist by Republican polititions, and I wouldn't be surprised if a few deluded white Americans actually thought he was a terrorist/communist bent on the destruction of America.

It's probably just me being hopeful, but now that Obama has won I hope that we will see him take an even more leftwinged approach to the economic crisis as well as all issues.
