A nice BM and DM (old) band BM albums would be the best for me like Transylvanian Hunger, Panzerfaust, and A Blaze in the Northern Sky all great albums a nice cold feeling to them they weren't that well produced though such as Translyvanian Hunger but that didn't matter though, Their new one The Cult is Alive Isn't Exatly BM was more punk influence to still good though, there video was good to

Old DM such as their 1 album and 4 demo's I think great as well especially Land of Frost their first demo differn't from all their album's and demo's it had the vocals echoed and had some nice melodys to it, Thulcandra demo was my second favorite from their DM era only 3 tracks on them but they where still good and their album Soulside Journey was nothing special but had some good songs on it

I'm rather conservative in my BM taste and I will always prefer the Norwegian old schol over anything else in the genre... of course Darkthrone are among ym very favouerite, I much worship some of their stuff, specially the groundbreaking "A Blaze In The Northern Sky".

I also find pretty interesting the times when this band played Death Metal ("Soulside Journey"), very good Morbid Angel-inspired Death very atmospheric and blackened in lyrics and aesthetics... this band is good in everyting they do... you can say that they repeat themselves, but I will never get bored of Darkthrone and I could sin along with every song on every album and still don't get enough...

The cult is alive is ok, the musicianship is good but i wouldnt class it as a real darkthrone album, they should have done that old bm tradition of having a side project. (see 101 rules of black metal)
47: Have a side project. Ensure that all other members of your band also have side projects.
48: Fill out the other slots in your other member's side projects as "session" musicians.

The true black metal. No band ever could reach their masterpieces.Nocturno Culto has the best black metal voice that has ever been heard.I think that their last album was good but also it sounded to me a bit "punky"

Yeah Darkthrone is the band that got me into black metal. They are really good (especially their older stuff) and a lot of their albums are simply masterpieces. My favorite album is Under a Funeral Moon, but I like all the rest of their stuff. The cult is alive was quite a let down IMO. It wasn't the same Darkthrone that I always enjoyed. But that's just me.

Definetly THE difinitive Black Metal band out there. Their original BM releases are what really make them great...A Blaze In The Northern Sky through to Panzerfaust wasall amazing. I really don't enjoy any of it after that, but DAMN those are amazing albums. They create such a cold, grim atmosphere that very few other bands will ever be able to. Darkthrone, holy Darkthrone!

Darkthrone have earned my respect not only because they have made some amazing music in the past, but because they really don't care about whether they alienate fans with their new stuff either. The spirit of Black Metal was to do exactly what you wanted to, and rebel against anything that was remotely 'the norm', and they've done that yet again with 'The Cult is Alive'. Black Metal is becoming more and more of a trend, and Darkthrone are showing their disapproval. Tr00 kvlt!!!

My favourite albums would have to be 'A Blaze in the Northern Sky', 'Transilvanian Hunger', and 'Panzerfaust', but more than their songs I love their attitude and elitist mentality, it just says 'fuck you, we're going to do whatever the hell we want!'. Which is perhaps a reason for their punk leanings from time to time.

There was PLENTY of reason for them to change it up. They changed as a rebellion against the newer breed of 'black metal' bands that merely ape the old. They harkened back to the genre's punk roots* while remaining within their own idiom. It's clearly and unmistakably a Darkthrone album, even if it doesn't follow the blueprint of their previous releases. It's all in the attitude.

Besides, most of the "tr00" kiddies don't like anything they did after "Panzerfaust" anyways... surf the old, archived threads sometimes. I find that paradoxical - people disappointed about everything they did over the past decade, and then disappointed when they alter their style. As if the only thing they liked about the band was the low-fi recording and the corpsepaint...

Personally, I think "Hate Them" is their best album, and I thoroughly enjoy "Ravishing Grimness" and "Plaguewielder"...

Yes they changed and experimented with alot in The Cult Is Alive but it's not like they have never changed before that. I mean let's face it, Panzerfaust was like the last real BM album they had. There were some rock influences on Total Death and after that I really don't have any respect for their music, I thought most of it was crap. I love them for all their bm up to Panzerfaust

To me, the albums between Panzerfaust and Hate Them weren't too good. They kinda picked up the slack on Hate Them, made a huge rebound on Sardonic Wrath, and Cult Is Alive does an amazing job at mixing Darkthrone with the aspects of punk rock that I enjoy.

I disagree with Alfonso... the album Total Death was a total killer black'nRoll release.... Goatlord wasn't that good basically because it was made as tribute to Celtic Frost, and I just love Plaguewielder and Ravishing Grimness... I had never understood why those two albums are so overlooked.

the songs on those two seem to draw on almost too long in a ways - as someone who likes ambient electronic music, it's almost like darker, guitar driven atmospheric ambient, in a way, particularly on "Plaguewielder." If that makes sense.

Zombie, M.D.

People seem to forget a significant line-up change that came with their new sound. Zephyrous was handling the guitar duties in what was considered their prime, Nocturno Culto was playing bass up until Panzerfaust.

Well it depends more on who is writing the riffs than who s playing them , so....

Im not totally sure who wrote them, it could have been Noctunro Culto, but it seems to me that the change in sound came after Nocturno Culto became the guitarist.

i'm not 100% sure but Nocturno wrote no riffs ( or just a few...) up untill later, a few on Total Death maybe but lots on R G up untill the latest album.
Actually Fenriz wrote just a song on RG and Plaguewielder ( Wreak)and maybe 2 on Hate them ( Fucked up and ready to die !...) Sardonic Wrath is like 50% and The Cult 100% Fenriz, hope i'm not wrong.

I'm gonna have to disagree on that one. Darkthrone was an excellent black metal band, but their new stuff is kind of boring now. =\ I mean A Blaze In The Northern Sky, and Transylvanian Hunger are probably the best black metal albums they put out. But everything after that seems boring, and dull to me. Except "Goatlord."

In a recent interview Nocturno admitted that nowadays it's trendy for people who got into black metal during it's peak of popularity - when symphonic bands were changing it into theatre more and more - to listen to the "true" bands. Hard to say when someone really likes the music and feels and when someone poses.

I'm surprised I haven't posted in this thread yet.

The Cult Is Alive is a good album with a punky/thrashy feel to it., different from some of Darkthrone's well known stuff. I respect them for changing because variety is good in my eyes. I still wish they used Nocturno's 'normal' vocals on 'Graveyard Sult' though. Those vocals sorta irk me. But still, it was an experiment that heralded good results.

But like a lot of other people, my favourite Darkthrone album is 'A Blaze In The Northern Sky'. Great influential black metal.
