As I sit here and listen to most likely the greatest band of all time I notice that there isn't a topic for them, so I decided to make one. Manowar are a band that you must love, and if you don't, you're gay. Haha, seriously though. They make some wicked music, though pompous, they deserve to be, I mean, they are the KINGS OF METAL. I do enjoy their upbeat attitude, killer riffing, and Eric Adams god like vocals. Very manly. I would call them Heavy Metal (or moreover, Traditional Metal) than anything, but they do have some Speed and Power Metal tendencies every now and then. Any fans?

And remember kids, while other bands play - Manowar kill.

I thought this thread will be all 'true metal of steel'

I personally think that everything they do, they do it for the money. Guinness record for the longest running concert? If it was any other band, I would have thought that there is a bit of non-commercialism there, but there is not one bit! And their lyrics - wtf??? The band Nanowar makes fun of them, but the actual Manowar lyrics are 10000 times more ridiculous.

Everything about Manowar is marketing. Everything they do reeks capitalism and screams CASH GRAB in capital letters.

If 200 people came to their first concert in my country, would they come back? No, of course, but many bands do come back.

I agree, RavenKing.

I sometimes use the term "false metal" the same way I use the terms "flowermetal" or "popmetal": to describe music that is simply too soft and pop-ish to be considered metal by any stretch of the imagination (you can include hard rock and cock rock here) even if the stuff comes from a band who released much heavier albums before or by a band who's supposed to be a metal band.
I think the word "metal" is used way too loosely at times and applied to bands who barely have anything to do with metal music.

I never use the term "false metal". I totally agree with ErnilEnNaur that there is only music which is metal, and music which isn't. As for hard rock, well, it's hard rock, and shouldn't be classed as metal at all, therefore calling it "false metal" seems a bit silly to me, when it's not even metal to start with. lol I remember discussing with you a while back about with some bands, the line between hard rock, and metal, is blurred. (IE: Current Edguy) Therefore making it pretty much up to interpretation on whether the band is metal or not. I do think that some softer metal should be called hard rock instead, but if I thought that, I would call it that. Ive never used the term "false metal", because I don't think there is any such thing. It's either metal, or it isn't.

Anything I label to as "false metal" is simply not metal from my point of view, of course. However, when some people call it metal and it is not, I call it "false metal" to underline the distinction.

Well, it is great that you at least acknowledge that your interpretation of what is "false metal" is exactly that, your point of view. Most who use that term, do so in a very matter of fact way, and also, usually use it a lot merely as a means to demean metal than they do not like. Even if the music in question is quite obviously metal. I kinda do the same thing as you, the only difference being, I wouldn't use the term "false metal". lol Id just say that in my opinion, the music isn't metal.

Poison [USA] I would call false metal because they PRETEND to be metal when in fact their music has shit all to do with any kind of metal whatsoever.

Poison are not metal, you're right. However, I think "metal" was more a label applied to them by media, Im not sure if the band themselves ever claimed to be metal, or "pretended" to be metal. "Glam metal" was a term invented by the media, so Im not sure if any of those bands were actually "pretending" to be metal, or they were just a product of a label that was applied to them by external forces. Most bands that were labelled "glam metal" were far closer to, or actually were, hard rock, not metal. But I guess that's just a product of narrow minds who had it down that guys with long hair playing guitars with distortion automatically had be playing metal.

They called themselves metal. And the term glam metal was also used by the bands and not really a media invention unlike the term nu-metal.
Btw Poison is not even hard rock, it is bubble gum pop with some distorted guitars.

Well, I will never use the term "false metal" the way some people stuck in the 80s use it to dismiss Thrash, Black or Death Metal. You can dislike those genres but saying it is "false metal" when you listen to music that is much softer and less extreme is quite retarded and nonsensical.

Since we are on the Manowar thread... I sometimes read the kind of comment you mention.
"Black Metal is for posers, listen to true metal like Manowar". Sorry, but anyone who holds this kind of speech is a fucking moron.

Well, I didn't know that. I knew they were classed as metal, but didn't know they referred to themselves as that. That is a good classification for Poison, although other bands who were classed by some as glam (like mid-late 80's era Whitesnake) were definitely hard rock. A lot of "glam metal" bands of the 80's though, like Warrant and Danger Danger, were really just pop with distorted guitars. lol

Mid to late 80s era Whietsanke were onyl referred to as glam in the uS and Britain the rest just kept calling them hard rock cause apart from looks they had nothing in common with glam. Damn even thrash band of that age looked a lot like glam bands.

Many bands wear those stage costums even Iron maiden, some bands wear a suit and those wird 80's panths like band video ''Valley Of The King'' forgot name of band

Such an overrated band. I love their image of being metal warriors and all, especially now days, where metalheads calling metal a superior form of music is seen as a bad thing, even among other metalheads. But their music just doesn't cut it. Its just so damn boring. I mean, they're all skilled musicians, no one will deny that, but they sure struggle to write good riffs. To their credit though, Eric Adams is a GREAT vocalist.

It's all in degrees though. Yeah, I'd say they're skilled, but not amazing by any real stretch. Maybe "competent" would be a better word to describe them. The drums are shit though.

kkkk
I'm mean, they call everything that have guitar with distorcion, metal or hardcore...or malcore...ahushusdhauds
Don't know either.
But...only thing i now, although manowar is very commercial, i still like many of their songs. Even if the lyrics are too way cheesy nordic cliches.

Huh? There's plenty of distorted guitar stuff in the US that isn't considered metal. Take Pearl Jam's "Do The Evolution" as an example. I'm not sure I have any clue what you're trying to get at here...

I've been listening to this band for the past few days for whatever reason, and they're really growing one me... Battle Hymn's, Into Glory Ride, and Triumph of Steel in particular. Sign of the Hammer is almost great, but the production is so awful, that it really drags the whole thing down-And I think Welcome to Hell has good enough production. It's actually kinda ironic that in the song "All Men play on 10" they have lyrics going against a sound that's thin, yet this album is hella thin sounding... Which I suppose reinforces the arguments of some people that this band is nothing more than a money making tool.
