Metal Storm was founded in autumn 2000 by Ivan, originally with the .ee domain. This is the Estonian extension, where the server was located at the time. Since then Metal Storm has grown into an international website, with its members coming from every continent, except maybe Antarctica.

In 2019/2020 a bunch of active staff at the time took over maintenance of the site and founded a non-profit entity that now operates it.
