Bands
Lîvi

The birth of Lîvi is usually associated with year 1976, although a band with this name existed for a short time before that. The only common thing is that both bands were founded by Juris Pavîtols - a well known guitarist in the 1970s. Lîvi were founded in the summer of 1976, when two people first met - Pavîtols and Çriks Íiìelis, a young guitarist from the city of Saldus. Although their characters varied a lot, they had one common thing on their minds, that is, to form the basis of a new genre, which they referred to as "Latvian rock".

Bands
War

Stockholm's War, also operational under the billing Total War, is a deadly assemblage of Abruptum, Vondur and Ophthalamia members It (Tony Särkää) and All (Jim Berger) together with Hypocrisy and The Abyss men Peter Tägtgren on drums and bassist Mikael Hedlund with former Dark Funeral guitarist Blackmoon (David Parland).

US label Necropolis Records issued debut album Total War in 1998, followed by We Are War, featuring the Sodom cover version "Bombenhagel", in November 1999. The two albums would be combined, as Total War, in 2001 dubbed We Are...Total War.

Bands
Aleph

Aleph takes its primeval shape in Bergamo, Italy, with summer '98 sickly passing away. Only two of the three "founding fathers" survive the following winter: Dave Battaglia and Manuel Togni lead the band to the first self-produced demotape Falx Lunae, released in January 2000. The record scores several Top demos and favourable reviews on the Italian press and features the first version of "El Aleph".

After two years and a consistent line-up turnover (which allows the band to get in touch with the magic of keyboard player Giulio Gasperini, in September 2000), the band releases its second demo, Promo 2002, in March 2002. Between 2002 and 2004 Aleph gets encouraging reviews by Italian and foreign press as well, appears on two compilations Atlantida (featuring "Hallowed Hatred") and Climbers (featuring "Acid Tears"), but has to face further changes in the line-up: the blazing fingers of guitarist Lorenzo Fugazza plunge deep into the band's bloody tissue in autumn 2003. With this renewed stage-machine ready to hit the road again, Aleph plays a bunch of wild live shows through 2004.

Bands
Gates Of Ishtar

Gates Of Ishtar was created at the end of 1992. Drummer Oskar Karlsson and bassist Niclas Svenssson were previously with Decortition, Karlsson also citing credits with Defleshed. The band released a modestly titled demo tape the following year modestly titled Best Demo Of '95 which landed them a deal with Finnish label Spinefarm Records.

The debut album, June 1996's A Blood Red Path, although typical death metal, did also include a cover version of the W.A.S.P. hit "I Wanna Be Somebody" and Gates Of Ishtar were to subsequently tour with the likes of At The Gates, Dark Tranquillity and Luciferion. However, both Karlsson and Svensson departed and formed The Everdawn together with ex-Decortition and Scheitan man Pierre Törnkvist and wound up releasing the 1997 album Poems - Burn The Past.

Pet Slimmers Of The Year - Fragments Of Uniforms

I am always on the lookout for unique and ambitious post metal and Fragments Of Uniforms is a terrific addition for my post/sludge/atmospheric metal collection. The genre has become a bit stagnant lately, not to say there hasn't been quality releases, but it seems the music follows the same formula over and over and is afraid to take any chances.

Bloody Hammers - Under Satan's Sun

Let's face it: we've all been guilty of complaining about originality in music at one point or another. Many people (self included) have proudly boasted an "if it aint new, it aint true" type of outlook, rejecting many bands that recycle old formulas and don't push boundaries. Pretentious elitism aside, however, there are admittedly a good number of bands that stick to more orthodox approaches and still get the job done, and Bloody Hammers are on the scene this year as one of them.

Bands
Morne

Morne was a concept that began with many trials and tribulations. The band was founded by Milosz Gassan in 2005, and while there were many interested individuals in making the project happen, only one lineup had the dedication and passion to make the band a reality. In 2007, Milosz was joined by Max Furst (bass) and Kevin Adams (drums) and it was here where Morne began to create and develop the band's distinct sound heard today. After just a few months of rehearsal, the band entered a studio to record their first demo. As time went on, the songs continued to further shape and evolve. In the following summer of 2008, Morne was joined by Jeff Hayward right before the band's first formal studio recording session for a split 12" with the UK band Warprayer.
