Gojira + Trepalium + Klone - Manchester, England, 07.11.12 by Talie Eigeland (24)
Third date of the European tour, and this is a line-up that makes a lot of sense. After the Gojira, Lamb Of God and Dethklok expedition got cancelled due to whatever charges Blythe is apparently still facing, we get this enthusiastic bunch of Frenchmen as a substitute and people have yet to complain.

Klone are prompt with their stage arrival and hence the room isn't entirely full when they begin. However Klone are exceedingly good. There's something Tool-ish about Yann's voice, but they have a very particular style that's quite difficult to place. Grunge metal, slightly proggy... Something like that. It sounds French, and it sounds awesome. More interestingly, they have a complicated dance choreography going on. They end with a cover of Bjork's Army of Me, which we expect to sound awkward and/or very wrong, but turns out to be excellent.

The music between sets is of equally French nature, and our conclusion from the playlist is that French bands have a penchant for all things hippie. Meanwhile, audience members are exercising their language skills by yelling "sacre bleu", "jambon", and other less relevant things.

Trepalium, groove metal formation on the same label as Klone, seem to surprise Manchester a little. We clearly disappoint the band with our general lack of movement, but that's because we're otherwise engaged nodding in appreciation, as we do. That being said, a decent mosh-pit is achieved half-way through Gojira's set. Anyway, nice mixture of death metal and, well, groovy blues featuring a brief comeback from Klone's singer to help out with Sick Boogie Murder. Fun times.

And now for the main act, whose singer has finally got the totality of his hair back. The crowd goes cocobananas when Gojira chuck Explosia at us, the opening track from L'Enfant Sauvage. They've obviously spent a while in the USA because they're starting to swear with a pretty strong accent. Gojira fly pretty much all over the place whilst giving a flawless performance of tracks new and old. Mario's drum solo is as epic as ever and they end with Vacuity and an encore consisting of The Gift of Guilt. Manchester is still a bit mental and most audience members have shaken hands with at least one musician by the time they leave, (most likely Mario), and perhaps even won a guitar pick from within the beer pond that is currently the floor. We are promised the band's swift return to the UK.

Setlist: Explosia / Flying Whales / The Heaviest Matter of the Universe / Backbone / L'Enfant Sauvage / The Art of Dying / Toxic Garbage Island / Wisdom Comes / Oroborus / Drum Solo / Clone / The Axe / Vacuity / The Gift of Guilt

Saw all these guys when they passed through Sweden. They were all great with my special favorite being Klone but yeah... Great times.

Nice article!

Looking forward to seeing this tour tomorrow. hope the setlist isn't entirely like that - would like ocean planet or, if there is a god, world to come or esoteric surgery, but yeah, fairly excited

When I saw Klone at Hellfest, I was rather disappointed with their performance. Their delivery didn't live up to the album quality. However, I might cut them some slack because they performed at 10:30 in the morning.

Well, they very pretty damn active on stage at 20.00, specially the vocalist. Very energetic dudes. Smaller venues seems to be the key for some good performances I would say.

Active or not on stage, sometimes things just don't come across as powerful and alive. At HF it was exactly like that. When seen at a smaller venue, I agree, things could be really different.

Hmm could be. I dunno... I remember I vaguely listened to their latest before going to the show and damn... My favorite version of Rocket's Smoke is the live one hahahaha. I felt the vocals for example were more powerful that day anyway... Dude wasn't scared to sound more aggressive than on the album.
