...And just when you thought the season of seemingly endless waves of "best of" lists was finally over... The boys, girls and senile old men from the Metal Storm Staff and Elite team never cease to surprise, do they.
For a brief, nostalgic instant, we at the Metal Storm hacienda all glanced back at the glorious year of metal that was 2009. Under the motto "what happens in 2009, stays in 2009", we crafted a fancy end-of-year recap, just for your reading pleasure. A bit of insight, a bit of hilarity and a few good stories, it's all here.
So pull up a lawn chair, grab a beer or two and some popcorn if you like; this one's about to get really interesting. And nasty. And it could get ugly really quick too. Anyway, let's crank this thing up.

Staff
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
 | Bararey
Best Song: Fleshgod Apocalypse - In Honour of Reason
Favourite Album: Colosseum - Chapter 2: Numquam and Fejd - Storm
Best Concert: Finntroll in Leeds (damn the lack of concerts in '09)
Metal Moment Of The Year: Having the worst cab drive to the airport and got dropped in front of the Chrome Division guys, and I thought that the cab crashed and I was dead, so I just walked away.
And 2010? To have better quality power metal albums.
|
Baz Anderson
Best Song: Sonata Arctica - Flag In The Ground
Favourite Album: Devin Townsend - Addicted
Best Concert: Blind Guardian at Bloodstock Open Air
Metal Moment Of The Year: The back-to-back run of Journey, Dream Theater, ZZ Top, Whitesnake and Def Leppard to close Download Festival.
And 2010? The new Fear Factory and Finntroll albums, and more festivals.
| |
 | BitterCOld
Best Song: Miley Cyrus - Party In The USA or Clutch - Sleestak Lightning - cannot decide.
Favourite Album: Mastodon - Crack The Skye
Best Concert: Enslaved/Opeth
Metal Moment Of The Year: Watching two of the roadies/techs/slaves for the Vader/The Amenta/Warbringer/Decrepit Birth tour playing hackey sack with the three-foot long double-ended dildo that the Warbringer drummer kept in his bass drum after their set was over.
And 2010? Wasn't as good as 2001, A Space Odyssey. Oh, metal. Looking forward to High On Fire.
|
Collin
Best Song: Diablo Swing Orchestra - Lucy Fears The Morning Star
Favourite Album: Converge - Axe To Fall (Mastodon and Process Of Guilt coming in close second)
Best Concert: St Vitus and Electric Wizard at Hellfest '09 (not a lot of shows this year)
Metal Moment Of The Year: (1) Not leaving the festival site during Manowar at Hellfest despite their urging me to do so. Let's face it, by Manowar standards I am a poser and a traitor to the true metal cause. And I don't own any loincloth. (2) Watching Marcel's special annual "Puking in improbable places" session. 2008 was on a train window in Rotterdam, 2009 on a tree in the VIP area of Hellfest, apparently just to clear up some space for more Jack Daniels. Yeah dude, that was metull
And 2010? Hopefully going to Hellfest, listening to the new Orphaned Land, Nevermore and Misery Index albums, catching up on 09 records, having a law against the systematic inclusion of tomato in sandwiches, making people stop calling me "team", that kind of stuff.
| |
 | Darkside Momo
Best Song: Riverside - Egoist Hedonist & Kreator - Escalation
Favourite Album: Kalisia - Cybion
Best Concert: Hellfest 09 (with Dream Theater, Sacred Reich, Suicidal Tendencies and countless others)
Metal Moment Of The Year: Hellfest '09 (again).
And 2010? Too many interesting albums already planned, it'll be an orgy (Orphaned Land, Nevermore, Dark Tranquillity, Cynic, Mekong Delta, Rhapsody Of Fire, Immolation, and OMG I forgot the rest).
|
dismaleuphony
Best Song: Madder Mortem - A Different Kind Of Hell
Favorite Album: Process Of Guilt - Erosion
Best Concert: Flowing Tears @Metal Female Voices Festival and Process Of Guilt @ Dutch Doom Days
Metal Moment Of The Year: Winning a photoshoot with Darzamat and Autumn at MFVF.
And 2010? Another trip to Europe planned around a gig/festival and more reviews for MS.
| |
 | GT
Best Song: Candlemass - Lucifer Rising
Favourite Album: n/a
Best Concert: Epica @ Wacken
Metal Moment Of The Year: The MS-meeting @ Wacken and some of the concerts I've been to.

|
Jeff
Best Song: Heaven And Hell - Bible Black
Favourite Album: Alice In Chains - Black Gives Way To Blue
Best Concert: Marillion @ Bikini Toulouse; Suicidal Tendencies @ Hellfest 2009; and Adam Bomb @ Nantes. Damn this one REALLY kicked my ass and only for 5 fucking €... Real rockers still exist!
Metal Moment Of The Year: Of course Hellfest 2009, especially the end... when I got a really good news
And 2010? Hellfest 2010 obviously, but I'm also curious to listen to the new Orphaned Land
| |
 | jupitreas
Best Song: Brutal Truth - Sugardaddy
Favourite Album: Impetuous Ritual - Relentless Execution Of Ceremonial Excrescence
Best Concert: Ulver, Faith No More
Metal Moment Of The Year: Members of Deicide and Keep Of Kalessin making fun of Samael during the final show of their tour together.
And 2010? I just hope the whole industry doesn't implode and learns to adapt to the contemporary consumer. I'd like to continue hearing good albums and going to good shows.
|
Lucas
Best Song: The Ruins Of Beverast - I Raised This Stone As A Ghastly Memorial
Favourite Album: Teitanblood - Seven Chalices
Best Concert: Esoteric on The Mahakali Assassins Tour
Metal Moment Of The Year: Mayhem's Hotel Room Frenzy (haha).
And 2010? If the new Esoteric tops their The Maniacal Vale, I will probably get arrested for running around on the streets, naked, yelling and screaming like Attila Csihar. I promise you all, I will.
| |
 | Marcel Hubregtse
Best Song: Procession - The Funeral Of An Age and the Corrosion/Lava doubleheader by Process Of Guilt
Favourite Album: Process Of Guilt - Erosion
Best Concert: Esoteric on The Mahakali Assassins Tour; Aathma and Process Of Guilt at Madrid Is The Dark Fest
Metal Moment Of The Year: Being complimented on wearing my Trouble shirt and what a cool band that is by Ron Holzner (bass, ex-Trouble) and me subsequently not recognizing him, backstage at Hellfest.
And 2010? Roadburn Festival and also highly anticipating the new Esoteric album.
|
Promonex

Best Concert: Only did one, and it's not Metallica.
Metal Moment Of The Year: Nergal outing himself as a notorious playboy by dating a playboy model. High five, brah.
And 2010? One word: Pig Destroyer. And attending more noteworthy concerts, so I can recruit extra people for my "bring back the Lemmy beard" movement. It's gonna be a thing.
| |
 | wrathchild
Best Song: n/a
Favourite Album: Kalisia - Cybion
Best Concert: Metallica in Paris (my first Metallica show)
Metal Moment Of The Year: Hellfest 09, another meeting with my fellow MS'ers.
And 2010? No fancy expectations.
|
ylside
Best Song: Exivious - Waves of Thought
Favourite Album: Mastodon - Crack The Skye
Best Concert: Nothing attended this year unfortunatly!
Metal Moment Of The Year: Camel riding for the first time in the beach and having kids laughing at me because I was as happy as a tourist. And... learned how to ride a bicycle. Lots of riding done in one year pfew... And last but not least, hearing two old 60+ ladies in the London tube talking about and enjoying Rage Against The Machine.
And 2010? Another Hellfest hopefully, and new efforts by Cynic, Therion, Gorguts, Septicflesh and Pain of Salvation. And whatever these newly reunited old school death metal bands will release. Oh yeah, and getting my MSc degree...

|
White Winter Sun
Best Song: Deströyer 666 - A Thousand Plagues
Favourite Album: Kalisia - Cybion
Best Concert: Not a lot of shows this year unfortunately!
Metal Moment Of The Year: It would have been a good one if I did not have to cancel my coming to the Hellfest 2009 at the latest moment.
And 2010? To be at Hellfest 2010 obviously and to meet MS'ers over there.

Glad you didn't mention my 2007 drunk Hellfest tent mishap I wonder what 2010 will bring in that sense. |

I didn't forget, I just didn't witness it at the time (and I'm glad I didn't) |
|
|
|
@Ylisde, yes, my toxic waste
@Collin, the only one that noticed was me and then especially the warm tingly feeling all over my hands |
|
|
|
| Very interesting, but you need more female staff as it looks like a police line up at the moment, or does Marcel's puking keep them away? |

As far as I remember no females witnessed my two little incidents
But come to think of it besides Bararay there's only Angelique as female staffer and Keli & Valan (both haven't been on-line in years) as female elites. |

Are Raiden and Baz long lost brothers as they look very similar?
I know they live a long way apart but we get Australian actors over here all the time in pantomime at Christmas, you never know, might have the same father. |

| Not a good year for live shows? You're telling me. At least you guys caught some concerts, my 2009 live show total amounted to zero. Better luck this year. |
|
|
|
I think everyone will agree with me on this one : we should get Lucas to execute his plans at Hellfest; there will be plenty of people to film the scene. And if possible, we should get Marcel to puke on him, so that'd be a double. There's potential for a big mess this year in Hellfest 2010, I'm glad I'll be part of it . |

"Darkside Momo" talked about Riverside. but no one talked about "Porcupine Tree". |

I am glad that a lot of the MS stuff talks about esoteric....they are amazing.
no one spoke about Moonspell.....but i hope they will deliver as a good album in 2010,and i would miss somehow Opeth in 2010. |

I'm not Marcel. But Kalisia wins the "Most boring band of the year" award together with My Dying Bride for me Oh, and I too forgot to include Esoteric in my expectations for 2010. I won't run around naked if it's awesome (no one would want to see that anyway) but I could film Lucas doing it, definitely. |

Thanks for the mention! Personally, I didn't buy or hear many new releases in 2009, so it seemed pointless for me to make a 'best of the year' type list. |
|
|
|
| Ivan, despite moving to metal country, like Finland, also declined as aside from working on MS, he had an 'un-metal' year. |

elvis and miley are different though. record labels write her music, elvis stole music from black women when that was acceptable in the music industry. its just a different kind of theft hahaha, oh how times change. |
