Hypocrisy, a well know band for singing songs about aliens, is the first opening act on Dimmu Borgir's US tour. This is their first time to the states and the response is positive. They riled the crowd under darkness with Peter Tagtgren's echoing voice and powerful guitar style. I personally love this band and wish that they could have played longer but, granted that three other bands were going to play Hypocrisy had enough time to give Portland a taste of their Alien black metal. They played songs from their newest album "Catch 22" like 'Destroyed' and 'On The Edge Of Madness'.

Alexi 'Wildchild' Lahio [Children Of Bodom]

The second opening band, Children Of Bodom, was amazing. I could tell by the audience's response that COB had many Portland fans. If you want an overall critique of this band, well, all I could say is that these guys know their shit! Many new and old fans, I think, were in trawled by their performance. With their new album "Hate Crew Deathroll" already in the hands of every US fan, it only seems right that they finally came to the states. They played only six songs including 'Hate Me' and Alexi's favorite 'Every Time I Die'. I had hoped that Hypocrisy and Children Of Bodom had played longer but, I am more their fan than a fan of Nevermore, maybe they will come to the states again on their own tours someday.

After a short stage change and sound check, Nevermore took the stage. These guys are more well-known and have a larger fan base here in Portland and probably throughout the rest of the states. I'm not too familiar with Nevermore, and it was hard to differentiate the vocals from the music, it was all muffled. I don't know, it could have been the sound guys or the fact that Warrel Dane's voice is low and deep. Their album "Enemies Of Reality" was released this year and they played many songs from this album along with some of their old favorites as well. Nevermore encouraged the crowd to cheer for their last song and to welcome Dimmu Borgir.

Shagrath [Dimmu Borgir]

Through black light and a vale of mist, demolishing war like keys play to welcome Dimmu Borgir to the stage. These guys defiantly have the support and the funds to put on a great show. With their leathery outfits and heavily spiked shin guards, Dimmu Borgir dressed to fit the part for their new album "Death Cult Armageddon". The Portland fans raged with the sounds of Shagrath's sweet voice making its way through the fog the bellowed off the stage. Galder [guitars] has a great confidence with the crowd and was continuously riling them up with raised arms. They played songs like, 'Progenies Of The Great Apocalypse' and 'For The World To Dictate Our Death'. I was amazed at how large of a man Simen Hestnaws [bass and backing vocals] is and that such a beautiful and enchanting voice could ring out from this burly looking fellow. I think that he's my favorite in the band. Dimmu Borgir played a great show, the best so far, I'm sure with each time that they come to the states their fan numbers will grow.

Galder [Dimmu Borgir]

This show had a great line up and all of the bands were amazing! I really hope that Hypocrisy and Children of Bodom come again and that Nevermore and Dimmu Borgir grace us with their presence in the future.
