...And here's the final piece to the latest Total Rust trilogy. This one comes from French black metallers Chaos Dei. While definitely a step down from the other two Total Rust releases you've seen here recently, Chaos Dei are still an interesting display of the mundane meets the bizarre.

Experimental? Nah, can't say it's experimental, more just slightly psychotic on the riff side of things. At first glance, this seems like a fairly typical black metal record. A track or two goes by before the attractive part of Arising From Chaos begins to reveal itself. No, there's no fancy bells & whistles, or severe, in-depth attempts at creating massive sounding atmospheric passages, nor any other pretentious tid-bits you could add. There are just a handful of solid, demented riffs, with a few atmospheric passages. You can add all the extra shit you want, but there's something admirable about creating a recognizable sound with less.

Remember when I said this appears to be a typical black metal recording at first glance? Well, that's because, by and large, it is a typical black metal record. They sort of built from the ground up; started off with a typical black metal sound, then made things interesting from there. The disappointing part is they didn't build very far. It's got just enough to make itself stand out a wee bit, but not much further than that.

As a whole Chaos Dei put out a typical album with a good handful of interesting moments, as opposed to an interesting album with some typical moments. A few flavourful riffs don't exactly make Arising... a home run, but something definitely worth checking out, even as a disposable, yet satisfying one-time-listen type of album.

Ordered all 3 of the 'trilogy' from Total Rust yesterday, including this as quite enjoyed "Saint Dawn" on YouTube.

Nicely written Doc, will let you know if I agree with you once the album arrives!
