Wasn't totally aware of such a thing as the "summer blues" til just a week or so ago. Sadly, sweatily, hungoverly, that shit exists. Especially with the two thousand flies in your apartment which have only two purposes of their regrettable existences discernible to you: to buzz directly and repeatedly up to your ears, preventing you from resting said blues out at night, and to make Rockabilia catalogs useful.
Luckily though, albums like Flayed Disciple's Death Hammer (at least the third hammer of death to be found on an album cover this year) are there to kick you in the ears, slap you out of your boring self-chiding glumness, and provide a near-perfect soundtrack for fly-genociding in your place.
This is pretty simple, pretty stupid death/thrash fun. The production is a little bland, and the Corpsegrinderish vox are generic to the point of being slightly annoying, but this is a riff-first, riff-foremost, riff-fest sort of deal. And sometimes, when pulled off well, that can be just what the doctor ordered when it comes to kicking your shit into gear and away from daily marathons of repeat Top Gears. Riffs take precedence over every other aspect of Flayed's tunes here, and since most of them sound peachy, it's a peachy thing.
You'll get some Bay Area-esque melodies and lick patterns, some early Floridian death-style vocals and riffing, and you'll get more than enough variation to keep you entertained. This isn't by any stretch nuanced or unique-sounding stuff, but it'll get the job done if all you want is MOAR RIFFS. It's all pretty derivative and dumb, but it's all pretty damn fun too. |
