2012 saw a staggering number of bands unleash some pretty fantastic debuts… Atoma, Royal Thunder, Lurk, and The Great Old Ones. 2013 sees the trend continuing, courtesy of the Old Ones' LADLO label mates, Regarde Les Hommes Tomber and their self-titled debut.

Regarde Les Hommes Tomber are a post-black meets sludge band from, as the name might imply, France.

The band creates some impressive music by taking an enthralling post-meets-sludge approach, then fusing in sporadic bursts of full-tilt, kit pounding black metal fury. Or, at other points, after mood is established, flowing into mid-paced, kit pounding sludge fury. After several straight reviews of more polished and subdued acts, it was oh so nice to listen to someone develop and build an atmosphere and then blow it the fuck up Krakatoa-style.

At times I found them reminiscent of fellow Frenchies, Eibon, which is a good thing.

One of the most aggravating factors in so many of the post-its I've reviewed is the vocals. It's been a huge sticking point with just over the top hooting and hollering that rips my attention away from the cool stuff the guys with instruments are doing and instead focus on how much I want to listen to something else.

Not an issue with these hommes. The vocals pull from the realm of black metal, a nice edgy rasp that adds some creepy factor to the atmosphere. Perhaps that is a reason why I found myself so enamored with this release.

Not particularly original - hell, there is a lot of cross-pollination going on between these styles. They take an approach that others also might take, but do so with conviction, which comes across in the tunes.

Saw this on the New Releases Tab and the album cover really drew me in. More great French black metal to add to the ever-expanding list? Count me in!
Go tell that long tongue liar
Go and tell that midnight rider
Tell the rambler, the gambler, the back biter
You tell em that God's gonna cut em down
