Metal is serious stuff guize!!
If it wasn't already obvious from the fact that there's a penis on the cover art, Neckbeard Deathcamp don't take themselves too seriously. If it wasn't obvious from the album and the artist name, this album is satirical. And it's only fitting that they make fun of white nationalists in the only metal genre that has a subgenre dedicated to Nazism: black metal. It's only fitting that they do it now, as controversy regarding the genre's ties to the ideology is questioned and also internet culture is more and more influenced by politics leaning to the right, and the other way around, too, as meme magic memed a man into the White House. We're not here to talk politics, as there's also a wrong tendency to lump everything right-wing or generally more conservative under the fascist label until it loses its meaning. No, we're here to make fun of the stereotype of the alt-right-winger.
With song titles like "Zyklon /b/" or "Please Respond (I Showed You My Penis)" or ? well you can actually read the song titles above the review, so you can just stop reading the review altogether because nothing I write here can come close to how hilarious they are. You can even go to Bandcamp to read their all-caps, rant-like lyrics, since for sure you won't be able to make them out from the music itself. This year particularly has seen a few satirical (mostly) black metal releases like Peosphoros, but the idea has been around since the late 1990s, when Anal Cunt's Seth Putnam came up with Impaled Northern Moonforest. And, honestly, if you've never recorded a satirical black metal demo, what are you even doing with your life? Even yours truly did.
It is quite clear that White Nationalists was meant first and foremost as a joke rather than as actual music, but let's talk about the music itself, too. For an album that was probably recorded in a few weekends at most, the music is quite decent. It's black metal that is very raw and often pushing more into war metal territories. It being so raw and primitive is balanced by the album's short 23-minute length. But even if this isn't atmospheric or forward-thinking or even that bestial black metal, there are enough riffs in this to warrant a full listen for more than just the joke. It's a fair guess that the members have other more serious projects besides Neckbeard Deathcamp.
There is little known about the band's position; whether they're more left-wing, big-brained centrists or very self-aware right-wingers is up for anyone's guess. One thing is for sure: black metal will be the next battleground for meme warfare. Do what you must, and call someone on the internet a cuck today.
