Exceptionally, this review will be special. This is not because I'm really lazy today, but because this new cd of the England label Peaceville, is a compilation of Black Metal produced by Mr Fenriz of Darkthrone. No rating, and no critics on the artists and the songs of this new cd because I'm not here to do comments on bands which are on a compilation, I'm here to do comments on the compilation itself. Let see then what Fenriz will propose to us through "The Best Of Old School Black Metal"?

Every Black Metal lovers know and respect Fenriz of Darkthrone no need for me to present him? But you must know that after a break of several years with Peaceville, Darkthrone decided to work again with the English label. This compilation will be the first new contribution of Fenriz with the firm from England.
"The Best Of Old School Black Metal" is like a journey, a big journey through the ages and through the story of one of the most fascinating musical style. From the precursors of this music, Venom and Bathory, through cult bands like Sarcofago and Tormentor, to the second wave era with Burzum, Mayhem or Samael, to finish with the new generation of the Black Metal attitude with Nattefrost and Aura Noir, Fenriz with this compilation show us his vision of the evolution of the true Black Metal.
Very varied, with old and young bands, with very dark and aggressive tracks, songs more "thrashy" or "heavy" you could find all that you need to have an idea of what is this musical style for an artist like Fenriz.
If you don't know this music, well I really think that this compilation is a must have for you. At least your first guide through the world of Black Metal will be one of the most important artist of the scene. Plus you must know that you'll have the chance to listen to a song by Burzum, who never appear on any compilation but made the exception only for Fenriz and his project.

"The Best Of Old School Black Metal" is a really good compilation for those who like or want to know the evolution of Black Metal. I'm certainly not the best person to talk about this musical style and about this compilation, then I will let the last word to Mr Fenriz?
"One can analyse a piece of music and deduct that is Black Metal, but Black Metal is a FEELING. And that feeling cannot be analysed" Fenriz [Darkthrone].
Meditate on this sentence and if you want some answers, have a look on the interview of Fenriz that will come soon on your favourite webzine, Metalstorm.ee?

"One can analyse a piece of music and deduct that is Black Metal, but Black Metal is a FEELING. And that feeling cannot be analysed"...

Now that's a deep and true phrase. That's why I respect black metal so much.

Black metal is my favorite genre of music and that quote is fucking pretentious.

Black metal isn't any different than any other genre in terms of feeling. All music evokes some kind of feeling unique to itself. And all feelings can be analyzed.

Say that to Fenriz.

I love Fenriz but I'd still tell him I think he's pretentious for believing black metal is something "removed" from music and analysis.

Just because he's famous and one of my favorite musicians means I shouldn't speak my mind?

yep, could say the following as well
"One can analyse a piece of music and deduct that is "Doom Metal, but Doom Metal is a FEELING. And that feeling cannot be analysed"...

and it rings just as true.
