Enjoying nationwide appreciation, the Thrash Metal band Anonymus can be considered as the Canadian counterpart of Slayer (plus their drummer is named Carlos Araya, go figure!). Chapter Chaos Begins is a solid album of old-school Thrash. But the similarity with Slayer stops there as their Thrash is mixed in with more modern elements and even a hint of Suicidal Tendencies.

The liveliness of Anonymus music is definitely their strength. Those guys must be a must-see live band. Their tunes are mainly sung in English but some tracks are in French. Either way, the compositions are the "in your face" kind of Metal, highly due to the energy displayed by Anonymus' singer/bass player Oscar Souto. But far from the binary Thrash Metal that some bands offer, Anonymus have incorporated some classy ideas into their songs.

Some tracks are borderline Death Metal at times, which is not a small feat. Overall, the guitar work of Jeff Fortin and Daniel Souto is strong and steady, with the occasional speed solo here and there. A must listen is actually the last song, 'Abusive Mental Anarchy', which constantly blurs the limits between genres while keeping a fantastic hold on the listener. The insane sounding 'I am addicted' is another highlight, with its 'The Nightmare Before Christmas' bridges and its guitar solos a la Iron Maiden.

Produced with the help of Jean-François Dagenais of Kataklysm fame, the emphasis has been put on the guitar sound, which gives a great base for the groove brought by the bass and the vocals to grow in the song structures.

This record is yet another powerful release from Quebec. Aggressive vocals, groundbreaking ideas, infectious guitar riffs and an overall groovy atmosphere are some of the keys that make Chapter Chaos Begins an explosive and fresh Thrash Metal album. Anonymus deserve a larger stage than Canada; so wherever you are join in the ride!
