Maybe that you still don't know them but even if the label is not so old, the team of Anticulture Records is really good to discover (and to sign) bands of the "new" scene. I'm not talking here about Nu Metal bands but more about Metalcore and brutal (Grind etc) ones. Even if the name of Gutworm should lead you to the conclusion that the band probably plays some Grindcore, I have to say that they're more into Metalcore but don't be worried this kind of Metalcore is top notch!

NO, you'll not find pop choruses here and NO, you'll not find clean vocals in this album. At the opposite the music of Gutworm is really violent! Just imagine some kind of Death Metal with vocals which are not so far away of Hardcore, add some touches of technicality, put some breaks and rhythms change there and there and you'll maybe understand how it sounds. But that's not all, "Disfigured Narcissus" (second album of this British combo) is also really complex with real classy melodies and with a ton of different sonorities. Maybe now that you're wondering why I said that Gutworm plays Metalcore? Well, probably because the music of the band sounds modern and that's right, even if it's not commercial, the songs are extremely catchy and melodic (not melodic a la Gothenburg Death though?). As you can understand it's impossible for me to compare the music of Gutworm with all the other true Death Metal bands but if it's Metalcore then I can tell you that all the famous bands of the genre can be worried today. Gutworm has created a new variation of the genre and perfectly knew how to mix the accessibility of this music with the quality that we all want to listen to when we like good Metal.

"Disfigured Narcissus" is not the perfect album but for a second release it's obvious that the band is able to do great things. Some of you will maybe not like the style of the voice of Neil Hudson (which is for me really good by the way, but I like to listen to bands like Hatesphere so it probably helps a bit?) and for sure some other ones will say that the album is maybe a bit long sometime and that some passages aren't essential but all in all, I loved to listen to this release and I say it again, I would like to listen such kind of "mordern" Metal a lot more.

"Disfigured Narcissus" is a great surprise and I really hope that you'll try to listen to this album as soon as possible. Don't be worried by the label that people (and I) put on the band. Just try it and I'm sure that you'll understand why I say all these positives words about this album. If you like Death, Grind, Hardcore or even Progressive Metal (yes!) I'm sure that you'll find something for you in this album. I will keep an eye on this band to have the confirmation soon that they will become "something". Highly recommended if you're a bit open minded and not only want old school Metal.
