After the huge success of 1998's Vovin, Swedish masters Therion release a compilation featuring new songs, new versions and live rendition of some of the hits. The release of Crowning of Atlantis in 1999 is an unusual fact in Therion's discography.
While the formula of mixing new tracks and old songs rarely achieves anything glorious, Crowning of Atlantis is an exception to the rule. With probably their best song up to that point with the new and improved version of 'Clavicula Nox', interesting covers of Manowar, Loudness and Accept and three grand brand fresh compositions, this album proves to be an essential in the band's discography.
The songs 'Crowning of Atlantis' and 'Mark of Cain' are two of those Therion songs that define their sound. The covers are all worth checking out. Even the live versions of 'To Mega Therion', 'The Wings of the Hydra' and 'Black Sun' are hits.
Not as defining as their full-length albums, this compilation features some of the best songs Therion have ever written and played. A perfect complement to Vovin, Deggial and Secret of the Runes, Crowning of Atlantis is in my opinion one of those "side" albums that you should get your hands on..
