So, After a very long time I received another independent release, to tell you the truth I've had a hard time finding a free space to work on "big" names from "big" labels, let alone independent releases, but what the hell? So anyway, fortunately for me this EP comes straight from the dirty hands of a friend, now the least thing I could do was to write this review down even when my schedule tells me the opposite sentence.

The Massacre Must Begin is a Death Metal band from Mexico, they do have some Thrash slices and the vocalist sounds Grindcore-ish at times (mostly at intros for example). Yes, as you can imagine they're not the most original band on the planet, on the contrary, they sound heavily influenced by bands from the "newer" scene such as Death Breath for example, and just like the aforementioned band they are trying to re-create a style that works only if it's executed with a complex songwriting and a better production.

Sadly it's not the case this time, the songwriting is quite basic and very freaking simple, the riffs repeat themselves over and over again while the drums constantly hit the double-bass pedal and "break" into a tiny twist every once in a while, most songs sound tedious and it just seems like they focused more on their sound clips than on their songwriting. Then, the production actually sucks, everything sounds drowned and dry at the same time, you can't actually hear the bass-guitar during the songs because it sounds as distorted as a rapist doing a pig...but in the end, it kinda works in its own context if you know what I mean, after all this is just a very lengthy demo.

What I'm trying to say is that this band does not offer anything musically speaking, but that doesn't mean they are not trying hard to create something audible and digestible; in the end we have a catchy structure with simple riffs, yes, but it's still catchy and interesting. We also have repetitive drumming, but the beat makes you headbang to the groove most of the times, and while the production sounds like a huge bathroom, it also adds a nice "indie" flavor towards the whole thing. Those are the good things I guess.

So, I can't recommend you to go out and buy this EP, you won't find it on your local retailer anyway. But why not, go to their Myspace and hear what they are offering, I mean I know I've reviewed better bands and all and I rarely recommend things I know. But it's always fun to hear a band like [b]The Massacre Must Begin[/n], a group no-ones recording Death Metal just for the sake of it, no strings attached, that's always a plus believe me.

My take on this album would be to keep an eye on them; who knows?maybe they'll polish their style and end up producing something really amazing.
