Thanks! I ordered the list definitely, there were some changes.

It's a great album indeed.

He's at home eating a sandwich. It's a good record, but not enough to made it here.

Ihsahn is pretty much GOD in my book. I love his solo work more than Emperor these days.

Many great albums this year, I think Saturnus - Saturn In Ascension is definitely also worthy of this list; on the contrary, I realize I don't agree with many fellow doomsters on Paradist Lost (that I think they're lacklustre).

I wouldn't go that far (Emperor is black metal history), but Eremita is an incredible album. I still hear it today from time to time.
I agree. This top 30 (!) list reflects the quality of 2012 outputs. Similar in quantity and quality only 1999 rivals.
Paradise Lost regained a lot of quality since In Requiem, and Tragic Idol is just glorious. This years new album is another pinnacle, PL seem incapable of doing bad music.

Ha I realize that in terms of influence I have to agree. What I meant was personally, knowing Ihsahn's own style and musicianship pretty well at this point, his unique mix of avant-garde black, progressive, symphonic and tinges of gothic aesthetics just resonates with me more on the whole. Emperor is more of a duo effort (with the exception of the last album written entirely by Ihsahn which happens to be my favourite so that should be telling), and Samoth's more straightforward death metal style in his subsequent projects doesn't do that much for me; so in a sense I've always loved one half of Emperor's sound more than the other - does that make sense? Also bear in mind I first discovered metal in my teens around 2007, so while I love and continue to discover a lot of awesome 90's bands/albums, I don't have the same perspective as someone with a ton of history and nostalgia with the genre.

I have a very particular opinion regarding that band. They seriously need to learn how to write a memorable song. No doubt they are skilled and all, but the songs go on forever and directionless. Its good background music while you the browse the net... internet metal ahah
I enjoyed their first record a lot actually.
