That song certainly is brilliant, as is the whole album (which is actually one of my all-time favourite albums), though I think I'd still prefer the song Paradise Belongs To You to it. Thanks for the thumbs up by the way. |

Thanks a lot, man! I viewed a few of your lists too and while I don't like them all equally, I especially think your "ultimate gothic albums" list is great (which I thumbed up a while ago). That list is keeping me from creating my own gothic albums list to be honest, since it would look a lot like yours, hahaha. |

Thanks! I know you said you're not fond of symphonic metal, but which albums are you referring to exactly? |
|
|
|
Mostly the Epica album, which I can hardly stand, and to a lesser extent The Sins Of Thy Beloved and After Forever albums. I must admit these two may not be "pure" Symphonic Metal, probably a mix of Symphonic and Gothic, but it still doesn't work for me.
Also, interesting choice regarding the Saturnus albums you've picked, Veronika Decides To Die and Martyre being generally praised a lot more. Not that I disagree with your choice though |

Ah I see. Well, Epica's The Phantom Agony is actually the only Epica album that's worthy of being on this list, since I like all of their other stuff way less (Design Your Universe for example is extremely overrated in my opinion). The Sins of Thy Beloved's debut album is a definite masterpiece in my opinion, so it will never leave this list.
Regarding Saturnus, I think Paradise Belongs To You is their absolute undisputed masterpiece (on Metallum this album gets by far the best reviews, check it out). Saturn In Ascension isn't nearly as great, but still good enough for this list. Both "Veronica" and Martyre are overrated in my opinion. Still great albums obviously, but I don't think they're worth more than an 8.5/10. Both have a few brilliant songs (I Long, Descending, Softly On The Path You Fade, Thus My Heart Weepeth For Thee), but also some songs that I like a bit less (for example: Pretend, Murky Waters, Thou Art Free, Lost My Way). How would you rank Saturnus' albums? |
|
|
|
I gave both Veronika and Martyre a very generous 10 back in the days but something between 8,5 and 9 would be more accurate. As for Paradise Blongs To You, I wholeheartedly agree with you, it is their masterpiece
Saturn In Ascension is for me their weakest, but I would still give it a 8,5. And I could have probably liked it more would it have been released a couple of years ago when I was really into the genre. |

I gave both of them a 9 initially, but downvoted them to an 8. Saturn In Ascension is a 9-9,5, while Paradise Belongs To You is of course a 10. Both of those (the last two I mentioned) are massive, but on "Paradise" literally every song is brilliant, while I don't enjoy every song as much on Saturn in Ascension (Mourning Sun and Call of the Raven Moon are my least favourites). Well, good to hear we at least agree on their debut being the best work of Saturnus, since most people happen to think either Martyre or Veronica Decides To Die is the best they ever made. I just don't have that "click" with those albums and I definitely have that with the other two. |

I also like your list, the gothic/symphonic part especially. Good to see A Sombre Dance here, that album is truly a masterpiece of symphonic metal, and quite overlooked.
From Summoning, I would've put Let Mortal Heroes Sing Your Fame instead of Oath Bound, but ok nevertheless.
I can recommend two bands you may like, Todesbonden (Atmospheric gothic/doom) and Madder Mortem (Atmospheric gothic metal). |

Thanks! So it seems you're about the opposite of Urs Blank? And yeah, A Sombre Dance is definitely an amazing album... one of those rare albums you get blown away by the first time you hear it, which also happened to me recently with Limbonic Art's In Abhorrence Dementia.
Well, as for Summoning... I have heard everything except for Let Mortal Heroes Sing Your Fame (yep, even Lugburz, which is their weakest but still good... just a totally different style), so it might replace Oath Bound at one point in the future. Since Stronghold is their best, that album will probably never leave this list.
I have yet to listen to Todesbonden, but I already own an album by Madder Mortem (Desiderata). Because the style is pretty unique I'm still not sure what to think of it. And the fact that Metalstorm labels them as "atmospheric gothic metal" doesn't mean they're right... they sound like atmospheric progressive metal to me. But maybe their other albums are different. |

It was interesting for me when I first head A Sombre Dance, because I didn't like it at all. I thought it was boring and all songs sounded the same. I remember I gave it a 3 But when I listened it again a few months later, I realized how good is it.
I heard a song from Abhorrence Dementia, I remember I liked it, still nedd to check the full album out.
How come you haven't heard LMHSYF? Shame on you It was the first I heard from Summoning, and enjoyed it immediately Just listen A New Power Is Rising and Farewell, they are epic as hell!
I agree about Madder Mortem, they are not a typical gothic band, but I think their last album, Eight Ways is more gothic/symphonic (it was the staff pick of Best Atmospheric Metal in 2008). |

Wow really? When I heard A Sombre Dance it was the complete opposite. And to be honest, the listens after that I still found it amazing, but slightly less. And rating it (or most albums anyway) a 3 is just unforgivable.
Well, pretty much every song from In Abhorrence Dementia is amazing, but here you go (if you haven't already found/downloaded it): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MHEaO3Y0qgw Symphonic black metal at its best... I have yet to hear an album in this genre that's better than this.
Haha, I own every Summoning album except for LMHSYF and Lugburz, but I'm going to buy them in the next few months. I started off with Minas Morgul, then Dol Guldur, Stronghold, Oath Bound and Lugburz as the final one I checked out. And I'll be sure to listen to those songs, thanks for the recommendations. |

Haha, yeah, nowadays I don't really rate anything below 5. I wait a few more spins before deciding, and only listen to albums from where I already liked some songs, so it basically starts from 5.
Thanks for the link, I actually saw this already, the song I heard was the first song from here. I'm not a big fan of black metal, I only like this symphonic type. I listened most of it, sounds nice, I really like the atmosphere, but doesn't seem melodic enough for my tastes. But I will give it a few more spins, I think it will be a grower. Thanks again! |

I usually only hand out 7's and higher, since I only listen to stuff that I like. And if I don't like it, I don't keep on listening to it, thus I don't rate it, haha. But yeah, most of the time I really need to listen multiple times to an album to judge it well, because most of the time I begin liking it more after more spins. And I have to admit that I also enjoy symphonic black metal the most out of all black metal, but I enjoy atmospheric black metal a lot too. Pure black metal is great too, but I'm not always in the mood for that.
Anyway, not melodic enough? Well, I disagree, but it's all subjective I guess, hehe. |

Wow, you actually have heard 45 albums on this list? Impressive. I have more albums that are a 9 or higher but those just didn't make it in this top 50. This started off as a top 20 list which was soon expanded to a top 50... at some point I'll expand it to a top 100 I think, but that wouldn't be in the near future. And I'm curious... which 5 albums haven't you heard?
I'm curious to see your top albums list, so why don't you create one too? Anyway, thanks for the +1! |

Hehe, I kind of have the same thing recently (especially with checking out debut albums for my list... it's gone out of control a bit to be honest ). If you like atmospheric doom then definitely check out Yearning. I've heard 3 albums of Yearning and Evershade is by far the best out of those, a real gem of an album. The album of Old Man's Child that I've listed is their (his: Galder) best work too, along with Revelation 666 - The Curse of Damnation (which is very underrated). Disembowelment is a must-hear if you like death/doom metal, a crushing and massive album that one, not to mention very original since they were among the first ones to mix death metal with doom metal. I think Spiritual Black Dimensions is Dimmu Borgir's best work, although somehow most people disagree with this and think Enthrone Darkness Triumphant is their best. I like that one almost as much, but not so much to put it in my top 50, though definitely top 100 material. Well, lastly there's Emperor... like Disembowelment's debut it's a true classic in the subgenre. Anyway, have fun listening to those albums. |

Alcest - their last two are much better
Agalloch - Marrow is their best release yet
Anathema - We're here is gorgeous
Fen - Dustwalker is fucking huge
Opeth - Ghost Reveries is a classic
Swallow The Sun - New Moon by a nose
WITTR - Celestial is a perfect blend of atmosphere and black metal |

Wow, although it seems we like the same bands, our tastes still differ immensely, because I don't agree with most of those choices at all.
Have only heard Alcest's first and second albums, and I like the first one more but the second one is still great though. Agalloch... you're actually one of the few people who likes "Marrow" more, but I feel it's their weakest, but still great (still a 8.5 for me). I'd rank their albums like this: Ashes Against the Grain > The Mantle > Pale Folklore > Marrow of the Spirit. I don't enjoy Anathema's later albums, as I'm more into death/doom. Serenades and especially The Silent Enigma are the best for me, but I admit I haven't heard everything by them (because I don't like the style). Have only listened to Epoch and The Malediction Fields and this debut is by a long shot their best, a 9.5 for me, although Epoch is probably a 7 or something... very boring in comparison to the debut. I'll listen to Dustwalker though, thanks for the tip. Most Opeth albums are excellent and Ghost Reveries ranks at #4 for me (which you can see in my list), just behind Blackwater Park, Morningrise and Still Life. Honestly, if I didn't limit the amount of albums per band to just 2 albums I'd probably add those 4 albums because they're all masterpieces in my opinion, so we (somewhat) agree about that. New Moon is overrated a bit in my opinion and I like their debut and Hope more, but it's definitely a great album. So again, it's just personal preference. I've only heard the debut and Two Hunters of WITTR, so I cannot say anything about their other albums. I definitely check those out though! |
