Here's a list of mostly Gothic Metal albums, exclusively of the "Beauty and the Beast" type (which refers to clean "angelic" female vocals contrasted with male growls/screams). I made this list because it's one of my all-time favourite subgenres of which I own "a lot" of great albums. Since there are several lists of the best Gothic Metal albums on MS, I didn't feel like creating a similar one, but rather an exclusive list solely comprised of this subgenre. It could be useful as a guide for people who are searching for these kinds of albums, though I'm very open to suggestions since I obviously haven't heard all great albums yet. Lastly, everything on this list is at least worth a 7.5/10 rating and I only add a maximum of 3 albums per band.

I take it that by "beauty and the beast" you mean a rough male voice and a clean female voice, right?

You are 100% correct. I think I should add that to the discription to avoid confusion, haha.

Cool idea for a list, I know I've "surfed" this topic before and not had much luck. Darzamat's album "Solfernus' Path" has some cool Beauty/Beast vocal combinations, as well as some really good music. Might fit your list, but it's one of those releases that encompasses many genres, goth, black, heavy and doom.
MechanisT - 13.03.2013 at 10:48
Widow's Weeds... does that album kill or what?
Nice list. I think I'll revisit my gothic past again and pick up some unknown ones along the way.
Dark†SymphonY - 13.03.2013 at 16:00
Interesting list, Draven's suggestion of Darzamat is a good one and also check out the band Via Mistica. They are very influenced by the early doom era of Theatre of Tragedy.
Leaves' Eyes is also one for the list, although not completely gothic, they work. Check their debut 'Lovelorn' too.

Thanks (for the +1)! I just listened to the album and while I liked it, I'm not sure whether it's the right album for this list. Funny MS has labeled them as "gothic metal", while it's definitely not gothic metal. It just has gothic influences if you ask me. I'll re-listen to it tomorrow and then decide if I add it or not.

Yeah, I just had to put Widows Weeds at #1, since it's probably the best damn album in this genre that I've heard (and it was one of the first albums too, as I bought it about 8 years ago or so). Lake of Sorrow blew me away just months back and is so amazing it's at #2 right now.

Anyway, thanks for the +1. Be sure to come back and give me suggestions, as the list doesn't feel complete right now.

"Beauty and the beast"-style of gothic metal was actually what got me into metal in the first place and it is still one of my favorite subgenres.

Here are some suggestions of bands and their best album in my opinion which are not on your list:

Trail of Tears - A New Dimension of Might
Lycanthia - Oligarchy
Evig Natt - I Am Silence
Autumn - When Lust Evokes the Curse
Mandrake - Innocence Weakness
Galadriel - The Mirror of Ages
Myriads - In Spheres Without Time (not featured of Metal Storm but still a great band)
PocketMetal - 14.03.2013 at 00:04

To me Theatre Of Tragedy's second album owns everything. But that's just me.

Also, since we are just talking about that particular style of vocals and not exclusively of gothic metal, maybe Unholy - Gracefallen could work here? I dunno...

Opeth is what got me into metal if I remember correctly, but not long after Opeth I discovered Tristania. Anyway, I've heard of a few of those, but haven't listened to any of them! Since there are a lot of suggestions all of a sudden I'll take the time to listen to them and then I might add them.

I only heard Virgin Black's debut, but keep in mind I only add "beauty and the beast" albums, since that's what this list is all about. As far as I know Within Temptation never was "beauty and the beast" metal (as there are no male vocals).

Also, since we are just talking about that particular style of vocals and not exclusively of gothic metal, maybe Unholy - Gracefallen could work here? I dunno...

I must admit I still haven't listened to "Velvet Darkness" enough to form a final decision, as I have still yet to buy it (which I'm going to do this month )... so that being said, it could be ranked higher than it is now. Also, keep in mind pretty much every album is 9/10 or 10/10 material for me, except for the last few albums. Adding ratings could be a good idea, but then again, I did that with my other list too and I just couldn't keep up since I need to hear every album at least 3-5 times before rating it. And you're right, it's not exclusively gothic metal, but these kind of vocals are found most of the time in (symphonic) gothic metal. I didn't know Unholy had female vocals until now, so I'll be sure to check them out.
E.Mols86 - 14.03.2013 at 23:39
I decided to change the list a bit by NOT ranking them anymore. It's just too hard to me to decide how they should be ranked, while it's easier for me to rate them, hence why I just added ratings. That way, you can get a good idea of how great the albums are on this list, although it's just my opinion. Few albums really deserve a 10, so those are pretty rare. I'll add the best songs per album soon, when I have the time to do so.

Oh, and I added Darzamat's album... although it's not typically this genre, it does still qualify for this list I think.

I only heard Virgin Black's debut, but keep in mind I only add "beauty and the beast" albums, since that's what this list is all about. As far as I know Within Temptation never was "beauty and the beast" metal (as there are no male vocals).

Both albums are male growled/female sang vocals (about 50/50 and 40/60 split respectivly). Virgin Black used a soprano on their Requiem albums to share the vocals, and London dropped his singing voice completly on Fortissimo in favor of a deep growl.
Westerholt did about 40% of the vocals on Within Temptation's first album (Enter), all growled. They dropped this formula on all subsequent releases (save a bonus track on Silent Force).
None of the other works of these bands qualify, though.
fanapathy - 15.03.2013 at 15:32
Yeah my first thought when reading the thread title was "Velvet Darkness They Fear". I'll never forget that album

Haven't listened to this genre in ages though, cheers
Marcel Hubregtse - 15.03.2013 at 15:50
You need the first two albums from Orphanage on there. Without them there wouldn't be After Forever and Epica and Within Temptation's debut
But like MC Vice said Enter by WT does have harsh vocals on it, courtesy of Robert Westerholt (not to be mistaken with Martij Westerholt )
Marcel Hubregtse - 15.03.2013 at 16:03
Seeing that some of those bands in your list don't have anything to do with gothic metal musically I would also suggest The Gathering - Always.

If memory serves me right, they started with the third album but it doesn't have that much tbh, just a few passages but with their fourth (and last) album the female vocals are very dominant.

Fantastic albums (and band).
E.Mols86 - 16.03.2013 at 00:01
First of all, since this list is somehow really popular (a lot of views, not thumbs up ) I started listening like a madman to a lot of the suggested albums and added 10 new ones (weirdly enough, I honestly liked every single album I checked out), thus improving the list greatly! However, keep in mind I'll add the ratings once I heard every album enough (3 times usually, so it could take some time)... and I do not rate albums carelessly!

Added the debut of To Cast A Shadow, that's some good stuff indeed! I listened a bit to Stille by Lacrimosa, but (correct me if I'm wrong) there aren't harsh vocals to be found, thus they don't qualify... do they have an album with grunts?

I don't know any bands, just one song: Amaseffer - Midian. There Angela Gossow growls with Mats Levén (clean singing) and some folk singer guy.
This combination would be interesting, for sure

I actually agree with you. When I was adding them yesterday I had the same feeling and thought "what the hell, I'll just finish this now that I'm at it anyway". Yes, most of them are symphonic/gothic combined with doom, though a few albums are actually partly death or black too. But then again, why add ratings if one could easily click on the album to find out the rating? Obviously the rating would be my opinion, but they're highly subjective so more votes means basically a more reliable rating.

First I ordered the albums, then added ratings and now they're without ratings ordered alphabetically... with genres... which I might remove again. Maybe I should just delete this list?

It is quite hard getting a list to look and easier for others to get interested. I would go against deleting the list as you've got alot of thumbs up and comments .

I'm actually satisfied with my other lists (especially my top 50 and debut albums ones) though not with this one. When I made this list I was listening a lot to these albums but now I'm not anymore, hence why I cannot rate/order the albums on this list like I wanted to do in the first place. Ah well, I'm sure I'll be in the mood again in the near future and then I'll just update the list. Although I wouldn't call 10 thumbs up "a lot". Let me know if there are any essential albums not on the list yet (though I highly doubt there are a lot of those left).

This Theatre Of Tragedy -Theatre Of Tragedy should be the first on the list if you ask me but why?The music, the atmosphere, the vocals, both female and male, the type of lyrical theme they used, the language they presented the lyrics with it,all and all are unique, then would be Lake of Sorrow in the second place

I decided to keep Lake of Sorrow at #1 for now, because people need to learn how brilliant that album is (but I also think it deserves to be #1, tied with Widow's Weeds).

Thanks for the +1 by the way. I don't agree with ToT's debut being THAT good to be honest (I promoted it on the list though). I still think Velvet Darkness They Fear is the better album of the two. Aegis comes 3rd for me, because it's way too soft for my taste. I enjoyed that one immensely the first couple of times, although I quickly grew bored of it and now I never really listen to it anymore.

The reasons you mention are good ones, although I think Velvet Darkness They Fear is superior when it comes to lyrics. The obvious example is the song "And When He Falleth", with a very interesting piece of dialogue. Enjoy that one a lot, but the best thing about that album for me remains the intro and the second song. Brilliantly done if you ask me. The only downside to the album is the last song. While it's a great song, it's not a very good closer.

You might wanna check Matriarch -Revered Unto Ages
for me it is a interesting mix of 3 types of female vocals-beast-ish growls, hysteric shrieks and a operatic vocals ...unique at least ...

Thanks for the recommendation, but I won't add it to this list because this band isn't featured on MS. I'll still check it out though.
