A collection of my personal favorite death metal, melo-death, blackened death and deathrash albums. One album per band and in no particular order other than alphabetical. List will be updated semi-regularly so remember to stop by every so often!

The signifies an album that is borderline perfect. Can you find them all?

Check out my other lists!
Black Doom Heavy Thrash

Enjoy!

Fearmeister, have to agree with mz here. Your doom list is a good length (just under 100 albums) and although death metal is more your cup of tea, I'd still suggest removing quite a few albums. The stars are a nice idea though. Just curious, but do you have a minimum rating for these albums?

Yea, the minimum is 8. I like to make large lists as I enjoy large lists myself. I tend to enjoy of simply picking something up at random and totally falling in love with it.

The star idea is actually my way of making a short list without physically making one. Those are always a 10. I view it as some sort of compromise, if you don't like the massive lists, just check out the stared bands and move on your merry way

(Sorry for the delay)

I only have one large list myself and even that one isn't as long as this one (275 albums on it now). I definitely understand it's fun to create large lists although your lists are only very helpful for people who already know quite a lot in the genre, so your lists are pretty extreme in that sense, and not really comprehensible (very overwhelming due to the length). I'm not criticizing, just saying.

And I agree it's good to apply stars to the 10's. Another idea I just thought of, why not do it like this:
8 = 1 star
9 = 2 stars
10 = 3 stars

But it's totally up to you since doing this would take you quite some time. In my opinion it would be even more helpful.

I do admit that the lists are quite daunting and that they are constructed to really only help veterans of the genre. But imo, there are 10 billion smaller lists out there that provides 'essential' albums for newbies for the whatever genre, the majority of which (for the most part) contain the same couple dozen bands. The lists are more or less simply to help people who want more of x genre.

Adding multiple stars is a decent idea though I feel like it might 'clutter' the list. After all, its massive as it is but I like how the star kinda stands out at the moment. I feel like if I start adding stars to all of them, then they all start to blur into one and that the 3 star bands might get overlooked. It IS a good idea for smaller lists though.

Yeah, I have to agree it's good to have a unique list since I have a couple of those too. I have a few specific lists that no-one else on the site has made (or at least not with success... for example, there's a "death doom" list already but in that list there are also lots of gothic and funeral doom albums included so it's a crap list if you ask me), whereas in your case it's all stuff for veterans, which is quite unique too seeing as each genre has a ton of lists that are all very similar, so it's really boring creating another one.

Anyway, I see your point about the stars thing. It was just an idea and I'm not entirely sure if it indeed would be better, because as you said, now the stars stand out more. Maybe you could try it out some time, but it takes a lot of time so I don't think it's worth it.

Amazing work. The five points is currently one of the best lists i have come across the site. Great way to cover more genres with the same idea.

I am not questioning you liking them. Just that they belong on the thrash list since they play groove thrash and have nothing to do with death metal.

You are probably right. They do have some melo death influences but I suppose the groove thrash is a stronger element in their music.

Sarpanitum, Pandemia, Obscenity, Mortification. Enthrallment! I must also recommend Altar's debut, if you've not already heard it

edit - more for ya: Queiron, http://www.metalstorm.net/bands/index.php?b_where=b.bandname&b_what=mess , http://www.metalstorm.net/bands/index.php?b_where=b.bandname&b_what=ouro and you probably know Beyond Creation but I wouldn't be terribly surprised if you found it boring. I really don't see the point of such long lists.

And in the end do you really have 403 favourite DM albums?!?

The one's listed with a star should be the contents of the list.

A bit hard to do when scrolling through 403 albums (or nearly a 1,000 Power Metal list some fellow did).

Also a lot of the list isn't exactly new or less well known - e.g. Amon Amarth, In Flames, Death etc. In many cases they're the "default" best album for a band.

You're actually better off using MS search functions and album charts for new albums.

e.g. http://metalstorm.net/bands/albums_top.php?album_style=Death

I don't know what is so hard about scrolling. At least my list has a bit of readability unlike that power metal list you mentioned.

True. But I wanted my lists to be all encompassing. That is why I have stars, to guide newbies to what I believe are the best in the list. Veterans could use it due to the vast amount of little known or under appreciated bands that can't be found via album charts that cap at 100 albums and require 20 people to agree on an album.

For a newbie the MS DM chart where 20 people need to agree on it is the best option. Those albums are starting points and generally agreed by a cross section of the Metal community as being roughly representative.

Or go to Wikipedia which will give you the initial bands to check out and will also have genre descriptors etc etc:

Problem is long lists make nothing stand out.

Also given it covers anything with growl vocals, it kind of comes off as too vague. Someone looking for Cannibal Corpse Clone 783 won't want to be listening to In Flames Clone 1157 and vice versa.
