Basically this list is to rank each letter of the alphabet in terms of it's potential usefulness in a band's logo. Just my opinion on which letters are the most valuable to have in a band name.

Looking at the value of each letter in capital form only, as the majority of band logos use capital letters only.

All the logos that are mentioned in the list are in the comments section for reference.

1. M - M is present in many classic logos. It has versatility, is naturally pointy, and is symmetrical, making it basically the ultimate letter. Also the letter my name starts with, so there is probably some bias at play here. But it is in the word metal, so.
2. T - Like 1st place M, T is symmetrical and fairly versatile. It gets such a high rank because of the potential to be shaped into a cross so easily, or the more widely seen inverted cross. Which is pretty metal.
3. O - O is also a good letter, it's easy to shape and mold around into various things. Also, like T it gets extra points cause you can make a very metal pentagram out of it quite easily.
4. S - S can often look very cool. Of all the curved letters jagged S's typically look the best. Also, like in Slayer's logo you can do the SS style thing, which is cool.
5. W - You would think being an inverted M that W might be a bit higher, but it just isn't as iconic and my name doesn't start with it. Warbringer and Watain both use it nicely.
6. K - K is naturally pointy and sharp, and not only that, it can be used to replace C, making words that weren't originally that good a lot better. Among other examples in this list of that are Havok and Vektor.
7. G - G has an interesting shape for a letter, and cool stuff can often trail off from that little bottom right part of it, like in Ghost's logo.
8. X - Everything about X is pretty metal, it's just a sharp and weird letter, also symmetrical which can be useful. Not many band names have X's in them though. Xentrix starts and ends with one which is nice. Toxik uses it very nicely.
9. N - N is similar to M and W. It is a naturally sharp letter and closes out a word nicely. See Spawn of Possession's logo for an example (2 N's at the end of words in that one).
10. A - A is nice because it is pointy but also the little bit of negative space inside it is cool. If you want you can put a little shape in there or something.
11. C - I actually like C a lot, it's a very nice letter for a band name to start with and usually looks good on the left side of logos. Can look very cool when it is pointy.
12. H - H is good for the same reason X can be, just gets a lower rank because the letter itself has natural vertical lines as opposed to the natural diagonal lines in X.
13. E - E can be good just for the fact that it has more usable horizontal lines than most letters. If you look at a logo like Skeletonwitch the E's connect nicely with the other letters because of those lines.
14. R - Despite being curved R can be made to look very good, and seems to be common as a closing letter. Exciter, Dekapitator, Kreator, etc.
15. U - U is pretty good. Not overly common but can be made to look very good, such as in bands like Unleashed. The space across the bottom makes it a little more versatile than V in my opinion, as well as the option to make it look curvy being available.
16. V - Good in that it's basically just a sharp point, but not as versatile as U and a little too simple for it's own good sometimes. Still used well in logos like Voivod's.
17. F - F is similar to E but doesn't have the benefit of vertical symmetry.
18. Y - Y is a little sneaky. Not a very common letter but has some good pointy qualities and the option to be symmetrical or tilted.
19. Z - Z is good being a backwards S, but it is basically mandatory to make it pointy which makes it less versatile and it is very uncommon.
20. P - P is alright, but doesn't tend to look as good as it's most similar letter R. Looks good in Possessed's logo, although that one is mostly lower case.
21. D - D isn't that great, it can do most of the things O can to fill up space but the pentagram factor is lost. Maybe a little too much negative space for my tastes. Not a bad letter though, looks good in Death's logo.
22. Q - Q has potential. The little squiggly at the bottom can be used in many different ways. It is just such an uncommon letter though. Quo Vadis makes it work nicely.
23. J - Hard to get very excited over J, basically has as much potential as L with the added bonus of the option to go curved and look good. Judas Priest I guess.
24. L - L is a very common letter but I find there is not an incredibly large number of options with it. It can look good though, it's angular.
25. B - Whose fucking idea was B anyways?
26. I - Just a stick basically.

Agreed with the upper case M and T, and their positioning in the list. Keeps my name afloat, and how.

LOL at I actually linking to a band.

Considering the position of "I" on the list, then it means their logo is the least effective ever?

See that's what I'm saying! Great letters they are

And Lit, lots of these logos have I's in them... But they are just sticks. the only time I can actually give I some props is when it's lower case so you can do something funky with the dot.

Note to self: when naming my band, consider the relative logo potential of each letter before thinking about whether it's a good name or not.

Yes, hopefully my list can make a positive impact on the world and make your bands logo the best it can be...

I guess if you were to go by the list Mottossm would be a good name.
Joodicator - 27.12.2013 at 01:12
I feel like potential for ümläüts should also be considered.

That is true, I guess another reason why U is above V on the list, although for A it doesn't really work cause my list only applies to capitals.

And yeah, this basically looks like a metal logo without even trying:

Class dismissed on the scientific accuracy of this list.

WAIT A MINUTE

Figured it out. I is at the bottom. --I--lham. Looks like someone is upset by how low their names first letter ranks.

Haha. Yes, and M is very high on that list, so all this is out of spite really. I'm like that .
