My favourite studio albums of 2013 (May change over time)

Created by: Chriwalker | 07.01.2014

1. Ayreon - The Theory Of Everything
This album gives me shivers, the lyrics are like flowing water telling a tale that flows through your mind. The people involved was perfect for the album. The also clever way of getting "42" songs into 4 and covering about 90 minutes of epic music! 10/10
2. ReVamp - Wild Card
A new discovery this year, Floor Jansen the woman with the mighty voice (I'm in love). Great on album, perfect live 10/10
3. Avantasia - The Mystery Of Time
I loved this metal/rock opera, it was fast, it was slow and it had great vocalists! But in the end it was not as good as Ayreon this year. 9/10
4. Helloween - Straight Out Of Hell
Kind of disappointing, jet still a ok album that sat in my mind, but as the previous two albums where really, really great, this album just didn't appeal to me as the previous two did. 8/10
5. Jorn - Traveller
I'll admit I haven't listen to this more than one time, it was okey, but I need a few more listening sessions I think. 7/10
6. Timo Tolkki - The Land Of New Hope
And then, a crown to the disappointment of the year! I thought this would be a great Metal opera when seeing the vocalists on the album. After the album was done I couldn't help but feel a little cheated. Great vocals on a not so great album. The lyrics was week and blunt. 6/10

Nice list, we agree on a few of these ratings.
I'm sure we both expected good things to come from Arjen, but I didn't think it'd be that amazing. I also find it to be a demanding listen (in the best possible way), not only because of its length but also because of the story, the musical changes and the overall vibe.
Toby certainly didn't disappoint either. And although his "opera" is both smaller in it's way of storytelling and also in its musicality, I found his lyrics to be more cleverly written overall (completely agree with your rating for that album too).
Love how you put it regarding Avalon; "Great vocals on a not so great album". I actually gave that one another listen quite recently and it held up a little better than before. I'm almost tempted to hand out an 8.
Based on how similar our tastes are (EDIT: Obviously! ), I'm looking forward to give that ReVamp some more listens (would not be surprised if I ended up handing out the same rating as you).
