Thumbs up: +5
This is a collection of solos in metal songs that are friggin' long. Just for shits and giggles.
I don't care for quality; all insanelyfuckinglong metal solos are welcome.

I make the rules up as I go along, but here are a few I've already come up with:
- Let's say "friggin' long" is at least one minute
- Solo requires at least some guitar (so keyboard-only solos are out of the question, but keyboard+guitar or keyboard and guitar switching solos is allowed)
- No Instrumentals
- If there's a short instrumental break between two solos it still counts (like between all the solos in Hangar 18)
- No live shenanigans
- One song/band
- No remakes
- No covers

Feel free to leave some suggestions. Include as much guitar-wankery as you please.
★ Stars go out to my favorite solos!
Have fun. Here are a bunch of examples to get you started--the first ones that came to mind + recommendations--ordered alphabetically:

Holy shit, and the song is over 3 minutes too!
Man, good to know bands are still pushing boundaries.
(I'm joking of course, I've heard Natasha )

You didn't add Painkiller? I don't like Judas Priest, but I remember that solo being too long.

I gotta recommend Polar by Outworld, which has my all-time favourite guitar solo from Rusty Cooley.

Nope, for the simple reason that everyone on this site already knows it anyways which is why I added "Ram It Down" instead.
EDIT: Actually, I changed it for "Dreamer Deceiver," which is one of my all-time favorite guitar solos.

Read the description, it says "no instrumentals"
Otherwise the list would be filled with Jason Becker, Marty Friedman, Jeff Loomis, etc.

Whoops! Sorry, I didn't pay attention.

Then add this:
Galneryus - Dawn Of Tragedy (jump to 4:22)
The guitar solo length is about 1m30s.
Can't remember if there's a longer solo made by them.

Edit: Could you please write the length of each solo in your list?

Here's some power metal entries then:

Dragonforce - Fury Of The Storm
Cellador - Seen Through Time

Edit: Stratovarius - Stratosphere (which is the whole fucking song lol)
LordHypnos - 16.08.2014 at 15:31
Bathory - Shores In Flames (jumped to 6:30)
1m30s solo.
LordHypnos - 16.08.2014 at 15:50
A possible candidate for the list:
Nile - Execration Text
Not a fan of Nile, but the whole song is like a big solo being played nonstop; and of course, it has vocals.

I think it's safe to assume that almost all of Dragonforce's guitar solos are long enough to qualify, but since I don't like the band I'll just add the one you suggested
As for Stratovarius: read the description, it says "no instrumentals"
The other two were added.

Not gonna include this one for a couple of reasons:
The whole song is not one long guitar solo, the rhythm guitar repeats itself in the same way "normal riffs" in other songs might, they're just a lot more technical, but the song returns to familiar themes. There's also a clear distinction between the rhythm and lead guitar, the actual solo starts at 1:20. Sure, the rhythm guitar might draw a lot of attention, but then most technical death metal songs would qualify as "one big solo."
The Bathory song was added. I like that someone was actually able to find a black metal song with such a long solo.
Zaphod - 16.08.2014 at 16:32
Thanks for the recommendations so far guys, you're doing exactly what I was hoping you'd do: find every fucking solo that's long enough to qualify for this list.

How about Trivium - Gunshot To The Head Of Trepidation?

Well Fury Of The Storm is probably the longest solo in DF's discography
and the Cellador one is pretty damn long lol
Erik M. - 16.08.2014 at 22:22
Sorry, not a fan of solos at all so I barely pay attention to which songs actually contains solos and which don't. Therefore I'm afraid I'm a pretty lousy contributor to your list.

One song did immediately come to mind though:

From 04:18 until 05:15 you'll clearly hear the solo. Great solo I'd say.

On that album (which is a masterpiece in my opinion) there are more solos. If you want I could find them for you. My guess is that one song from this album will do for your list, though.
Erik M. - 16.08.2014 at 22:25
From now on I'll pay better attention to solos and if I notice one, I'll let you know. Because so far the albums (songs) you have on here aren't to my liking at all. So I might influence that a little.

I've listened to that album 2 or 3 times, but I never really liked it. I'll add the song you linked though, since it qualifies. Also, I only include one song per band.

Probably because the genres that are known to have long-ass solos are mostly heavy, power, and progressive metal (and thrash maybe.) And I know those aren't really the genres you usually listen to.
Also, as the description says, this is just a list of long solos, I don't necessarily like all of these either.
Sword_Chant - 16.08.2014 at 23:52
Just found out the Dragonforce - Fury Of The Storm solo is nearly 3mins long, jeeez lol
LordHypnos - 17.08.2014 at 03:56
Another suggestion:
Savatage - He Carves His Stone (starts at 2:50 - ends at 3:50)

Hey Zaphod, do studio remakes of the same song count? Or covers? Or demo versions?

Hey Zaphod, do studio remakes of the same song count? Or covers? Or demo versions?

Thanks, I had just been going through my Savatage songs to try and guess which would be their longest solo, now I don't have to do that anymore.

And about your question: if it's a studio remake of a demo version, yes, if it's a studio remake of a studio version, no, covers, no, demo versions, yes.
If someone covers "Child In Time" I'd have to add it twice.
LordHypnos - 17.08.2014 at 15:57
Black Sabbath - The Warning, perhaps?

Edit: Forget what I said. I didn't know it was just a cover. I have another suggestion:
Hibria - Millennium Quest

This is 1min30s long, I think.

DM from my netherworld: Sinate - the last video listed here, all through the middle of the song

Final 2 mins:
Kekal (2005, Acidity album) track 7 - The Way of Thinking beyond Comprehension
Heathen (1991 track 6 (or potentially almost any other)) - Prisoners of Fate

edit after v - well, ain't that a bastard. The bastard part o' me would hazard a guess they (users and/or the band) fluffed the spelling themselves, unintentionally, but what do I know...
Black Steel - Destructor, from album of the same name
Absolute Steel - BeerRun from their last album Womanizer
Intruder - half the songs (I'd go with "The Enemy Within" or "Invisible") on Psycho Savant, similar could be said for Vektor & Cacophony, plus maybe Savage Messiah/Blind Illusion
Rex Mundi - Figure in a Dream (<- questionable) / Paul Di'Anno's Battlezone - Push (1998 alb 'Feel My Pain')
Time Requiem - Sin to Sin (2006) (& maybe many others) and David Shankle Group - Ashes to Ashes
Diamond Head - Sucking My Love from 1980 debut, also debut 1980 Def Leppard - Answer to the Master
Manilla Road's "Throne of Lies" and Tesla - track 2 on the '86 debut ... and dude, how 'bout early Testament - "The New Order"?
(further, as regards Megadeth, have you heard 'deth's "Go to Hell"? (video, released on Hidden Treasures)
...Something tells me Arch Enemy, Blind Guardian, Death, Decrepit Birth, Exmortus, Forbidden, Iced Earth and someone else should have something to qualify their appearance here...

Are you correcting me or the guy who submitted it? Because both the album page here on MS and the YouTube video have it with one 'n' so that's how I added it. (I know the word is normally spelled with two)

Just kidding of course. I can understand why you wouldn't like it. The solo is a few seconds shorter than 1 minute though, but good to see you still added it.

I guess that's true. Heavy and power metal I (almost) never listen to. Progressive every now and then, but for me it's mainly doom and black metal, as you know.

I don't know man I really wanna like Ayreon because I like sci fi but it just doesn't click
I've also tried his (Arjen's) other project, Star One, but it didn't click either.

I have to say I'm surprised you dislike Arjen's music, seeing as you indeed are fond of sci-fi (just like he is) and the spacey sound is heard in all Ayreon albums except for The Human Equation. And of course on both Star One albums as well.

Not gonna include this one for a couple of reasons...
From the same album, Unas Slayer of the Gods has guitar wank & little else for a minute after the 6'00 mark. Found another one c/o Paul Di'Anno's hired hands, too: "Protector" from his 1992 Killers (not FR) album Murder One. Currently listening to the "Remember Tomorrow" on the end of that

edit before v - Linear Sphere's "Father Pyramid" a bit djenty, maybe also Yngwie Malmsteen, "I'm My Own Enemy" from 92's Fire and Ice
Karlabos - 30.08.2014 at 16:32
Maybe this is too short of a solo for your purposes, nevertheless it's an epic solo. Can't get enough of it.

Hah, my feelings for it (them, multi-solos) are similar to yours for the TOOH one. I'll look forward to giving that a listen after this weekend. (Did you remember the chanting or heavy breathing? )

Beyond Creation has something Obscura-like: their first/only 2012 Video
Along similar lines, I'm bearing in mind / expecting something from Gnostic, Hellwitch, Gorod, Carcariass, maybe Quo Vadis and/or Mithras, and Eternal Gray (I recommend investigating the songs on their myspace page if you're able to do so)
From Greece: Kinetic, (both) track 3/4 from their first album; and Raging Storm's B-side "Oracles of Doom" released around the same time
For some sweet guitar/bass interplay, Dismember's "Dreaming in Red" and/or Kataklysm's "Feeling the Neverworld"
If you're including demos that were never re-recorded (yet), Vulgar had a great 1-minuter in the title track for their False Evolution demo
Late 80s, Dokken's "Kiss of Death" may hold some treasure, and Tony MacAlpine's "Urban Days" from 1990 tho it's kinda hard to say
Later, first song on Elvenking's third album; maybe "Future's Calling" by Dreamland Eden's Fall - Blur the Lines
Machine Called Man - first track on 2.004; also perhaps something from Annihilator and Argus - Bending Time?

edit after v - my pleasure (btw 1980 DH - "SML", potentially swap out for "Am I Evil?")
Also, somewhat like the Kata track I just mentioned, I just happened upon another relevant piece from one of my fav albums in its field. Ironically far from my choice cut on its album, yet still good: Tad Morose - Clearly Insane
911 edit: another 2-minute guitar finale, though it may not be quite fast enough for ya - Ikuinen Kaamos track 3 on 08 EP (bandcamp track(s) of 2013 Windhand another option, but probably even less likely to be added)
9/13 edit - I mentioned Savage Messiah in my first response; both their track "Carnival of Souls" and Shadows Fall - Stillness solo for very very near to 1 min

If you talk about guitar masturbation, The Devil's Blood is required. This song is among my favs by the band (around 2 min mark for solo, plus another one later):

Oh and if I mention TDB, the outro solo of the Lawless Darkness album is not less mandatory (around 10:20 min mark):
